Default What kind of bird ?

Not a great picture, needs to be zoomed in more. I have tried to identify this falcon ? maybe. Closest i see is a prairie falcon. But it looks like it is missing some of that identity. Any good bird guys here ? It is eating a gopher that was shot. I was thinking it may be a juvenile of some type ?
I am weak in the bird area for sure, maybe a hawk, what do you guys think ?

I think IR has it right. But it's hard to tell for sure with this photo.

To me it appears to be a Male Harrier. The males are light gray and the females are brown. Males are smaller then females.

If I could see it in flight I could be sure. Harriers are very distinct in flight.
They most often cruse close to the ground 3 to 30 feet up and they hold their wings in a shallow V when gliding.
Another thing to look for is that they have relatively long wings and tail compared to other hawks. This gives them a slow leisurely flight profile.

I'm going with marsh hawk as well. Not right to be a prairie falcon, IMO.

The easiest way to identify a Northern Harrier/Marsh Hawk is by the very obvious white rump patch.

true, another way is how they [harriers] fly, slow flaps and hover , while Falcons have fast wing beats to over take prey...chain
