Default Got an idea about range finders

Getting ready for spring turkey here, getting the stuff out and dusted off.

One of the things I always take with me either deer or turkey hunting is
my range finder.

Got the idea to make some kind of around the neck and over the shoulder
type of holster to carry it on me and keep it at about the place where a
shirt pocket would be.

I'm thinking leather (but needs to be water proofed) 1" wide strapping with
a pouch that has a flip open top area for easy access.

Some thing on the lines of an under the arm pistol holster only positioned
over the breast or shirt pocket area. Having it this position keeps it protected
and handy at the same time also don't have to sew pockets on what ever
camo I'm wearing at the time.

Any thoughts ?

The pocket to hold the range finder is kind of what I have in mind but
don't want it off the hip though.

I bought a hip type RF holster but never used it (think I found it at Langcaster)
because sometimes I stalk or still hunt and even when walking to a blind or
stand I don't want extra bulk at my sides and that particular one was made
of rigid plastic and way too long, like waring a sword scabbard.

Thanks for the suggestion though, see that one is making me think an open
top for easy access may be the way to go.

Hey !
What do those chest bino holders look like ?

Yup, I've got a lanyard on mine and have done the same, but
the lanyard is 1/8" poly cord and cuts into the back of my neck and
when I lean forword the RF swings out then when I stand back up it
smacks me in the chest. If I twist and look right it tries to pivot and
ends up a knot in my shirt, etc.

But yes it does work and I do that.
Must be a better way.
Did I mention the RF is a rather heavy little bugger as well, not very
big in size but big in weight at the end of a day ?

I was thinking of sewing on custom pockets to all my camos last year.
I'ld have to make my own because the RF will not fit in a standard
pocket size and most of my camos do not have a breast pocket.

Cheap upgrade is to purchase a lanyard of the type phys ed teachers put whistles on. usually made of tape/ribbon so they don't cut in to neck. You can get them at a dollar store

I shortened the cord on mine and made it so that its rest directly beside my binos but separate so I don't get any chance of hitting each other and creating noise. Also why I like these is when your lanyard cord and chest binos are in use one cord must go over the other, creating like a cats cradle when bringing up for viewing.

Oko, that maybe a big help for what I'm thinking of doing.
I still want to anchor it to stop the swinging out and in, so a simple
loop around the neck wont do it, but the whistle type lanyards may
be a place to look for affordable water proof material to rig up a
custom home made one.

Ya got me thinking.
Thanks.

The Moose,
Is your chest bino cords a simple loop around the neck type or are
they more like susspenders ?

Most shooters shouldnt have anything in breast pockets ...or even pockets at all ...i actually remove mine...seen two many pens, ciggarette packages ,reading glasses etc down on the 20 yd target after the shooter shoot them down via string and breast pocket....lol

Default Range finder case

Just happen to have one up on misc up for sale at $5.
Has a swivel snap to attach it to anything. I have attached it to a button hole in jacket or my suspenders when hunting when I actually carried a rangefinder. This one is not very big only 4 X 3 X 2 inches

Default Around neck and tucked in

It's funny that Lost Arrow should mention the nothing in your pockets. Last year my son missed a 180 class White Tail when he release the arrow, his rangefinder went 25 yards and just missed the deer. He went to cock another arrow and the string had jumped the cam. Lucky he didn't do any damage but he had to watch the deer slowly walk away undisturbed. As a RH shooter, I keep it in my RH breast pocket and there is no interference for me. Son hangs his on the hook now and has learned to get his distances early. A bit of buck fever didn't help.

Thanks for all the suggestions, it helps.
Right now I'm questioning my choice of pocket location, thought
it would have been the most convent and least arm movement.
Maybe I can come up with a better placement.

Maybe on your non drawing chest pocket but most will keep the range finder on their release side ......if your string is able to touch your chest pocket something is wrong.

I have a pocket clip on my range finder and either keep it in/on my pocket or clip it to the strap on my bino harness

Yes that is what I am refering too...many longsleve shirts have there pockets on the left side or bow arm side...[for RH shooter]thats where the issue lays...

A pocket on the release or right chest should be an issue...pending on shooters build

I cant shoot with a pocket on my bow arm side, left chest...however i have no issue with my binos in Bino Buddy harness style....

Default range finder

I have my range finder on a long cord around my neck with my string arm through the loop. My rangefinder sits in a jacket pocket for my right hand until I need it. Then I pull it out and use it. When I have the yardage, I just drop the range finder and the cord swings it against my side under my string arm out of the way while I shoot.
