Default Computer anti virus

What anti-virus do you guys use.
I have Norton but those buggers just keep charging, so I want to cancel them and go with avast or another free or reasonably priced anti-virus

I use the Windows one, and stay off of dodgy sites. In four years never had a problem.

Using bitdefender here. Not free but have offered an excellent product and they often have deals advertised that make it reasonable price. Every year I get a renewal much cheaper than full price.

I use AVG free but I don't click on random stuff. I visit a few hunting/trading sites, watch some youtube and shop at well established retailers.

I have used Norton and a host of others but have gone back to Norton. If you buy Norton at Staples when they have a sale you can pay 1/4 of the reg price and then cancel the auto renewal and do the same again in a year. Normally $69 to $89 and I have paid this year $19.99. Just another option

Yes, anti virus software comes with Windows. Don't need any other virus software.

Silly question. How can I remove all those solicitations after the Freebie ends ? Get's annoying.

They really push the subscription thing, and I have to admit that the constant nagging to upgrade and re-subscribe is not what one would expect for a paid product.

That being said, I usually wait for retailers to sell the licenses at this time of year. Last week I got the $100 package for around $25 at Staples. Covers ten devices.

I just run Windows Defender now, occasionally run free Malwarebytes to see if it says anything different. I make sure I clean things once in a while with CCleaner. I have Ublock Origin, ADblock, use Lastpass. I have really had zero trouble.

I don't use one, my IT buddy that built my PC doesn't use one on his work PCs, told me not to use one and just don't click weird links like an idiot. Works so far.

until i got both Eset and Malwarebytes my computer would crash many times and I would lose lots of information I wish I had saved on an external hard drive
I had spent lots of money at shops that could retrieve pictures and other info but they could not
I get lots of jokes from buddies and scan lots of different sites
That is why I got a computer to use it to do lots of research
Funny I would be on a site I would think was safe and malwarebytes would shut it down instantly
I have also had sites on the outdoorsmen forum cause me trouble

So either I am paying malwarebytes and Eset or I am paying memory express to fix my computer

I run basically the same setup, other than a different password manager. Also use uMatrix, HTTPS Everywhere, and Privacy Badger within Firefox. Haven't had any issues in many years of use.

Go to programs install/uninstall and remove them. Even though they are not actively protecting you the program is still running and can actually interfere with other programs. AVG free would not run properly as long as McAfee was still dormant on my computer.

Norton 360 premium with up to 10 devices for 25-35 bucks for the year. For those prices need to buy good friday or boxing day sales prices each year. Use with phones, laptops, computers and pads.

Worth it for me. Secure VPN, 150gb cloud backup, password manager and parental controls are some of the features. Firewall, antispam as well as other settings/features.

ps Staples is where I normally buy from.

Downside is they want your CC when you register and to auto buy at the end of the term. Upside is you can opt out later for auto buy. Then just add the key numbers for the new package of Norton. Downside- it doesnt add to your remaining time so you have to wait till your countdown days is comfort level as low as one day. But not a big deal to me.

Yep, totally agree. No need for AV software if you simply take some time to educate yourself and those sharing your network/computer.

A little common sense and education go a long way to help protect you.

I use the standard Windows Defender setup with the options that best meet my browsing habits and I've been doing it that way at least since Windows 10 first came out and sometime before that.

Depending on how robust your computer hardware or its age AV software running in the background can be a big drain on computer resources and has a history of causing other performace issues.

Though malware in all its various forms is certainly a concern and should not be taken lightly the Anti Virus software industrly promotes itself through fear mongering.

If your system OS is up to date, using some discretion on where your browsing, downloading and installing legitimate software from trusted sources and being mindful of the email you view or its related attahments you will be fine, just don't let your guard down.

A decent starting point to get some tips on security and privacy would be:

Well I just logged into my Norton account, and I pay $131.00 a year, it protects 2 lab tops 2 IPads and 2 IPhones.
Renewal is due January 2022 so it’s a bit pricey to say the least.
I have had Norton for 6 years or so with automatic payment and I’m sure it went up every year .

No farting around for the last four years just run apple products.

Prior to with other computers etc eventually hit problems so switched over as my kids went that route....no more open this, find that, download this, install that and a few months later run into another issue.

Absolutely, went that route when the kids were little.

Eventually it just slowed down to a crawl. Upgrading RAM or the Hard Disk would require ungluing the front glass and burrowing through board after board to get at those components, and even SSDs won't be properly compatible with it. Wiped it and turned it into a pricey internet browser and (slow) music workstation. Back to PCs for me now.
