All the classics have been mentioned and most I have watched a dozen times. I get excited when something new shows up but most I just shut off after a few disappointing minutes.
Surprisingly I clicked on one last night "The Harder They Fall" on Netflix and watched the whole thing without even looking at my laptop. Not going to be a classic but much better than most of the new stuff.
I also really enjoyed the "Godless" mini series on Netflix.

It's strange, but I never considered the last of the Mohicans, Jeremiah Johnson , or the Mountain Men westerns , but enjoyed them immensely .

Was surprised Django Unchained was not mentioned, a crazy amount of outrageous gun fighting, but entertaining nonetheless.
Another one I watched recently that was made in 2015 is called Bone Tomahawk it's a different kind of western/horror

I don't know if it's considered a western, by the TV series Hell on Wheels was excellent. It's definitely got elements of westerns.
A million ways to die in the west is pretty hilarious.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see the Magnificent 7 mentioned? I liked the original, and the remake. Great casts for both of them.
Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Cobourne in the 60s film.
Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawkes, Vincent Dinofrio (as the mountain man, he was excellent!) In the 2016 version.

My favorite all time is: the good, the bad, the ugly
But other high ranking are
Hang E'm high
Open range
Magnificent 7 ( both )
Lonesome dove
Hondo
Pretty much any Clint Eastwood western is worth the time to watch. John Wayne is a hit or miss for me but some of his movies are great...westerns and military flicks are about all I watch...maybe the odd shoot em up cop show as well...

Another very good Sam Peckinpah western is:
Ride the High Country, Randolf Scott came out of retirement to make it and it was his last film, since he made millions in real estate investments. His co-star in the movie was Joel McCrea, one of the great stars of American Westerns.

What no Cowboys vs vampires?
List starts and ends with Jeremiah Johnson, but there are notable exceptions.
The Cowboys, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Unforgiven, Open Range.
Maverick, Blazing Saddles, Silverado.
A couple newer ones I just don't what to make of but stuck with me, Slow West and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Now getting into the more old school traditional westerns, there are too many to list. Can't really say I have a fave but Pale Rider is the one that I always stop what I am doing to watch if it randomly end up on at any point in time.

Here is one that is very unique that I watched several years ago, it was released in 1995:
Dead Man staring Johnny Depp. It is one of the last movies made with the Legendary Hollywood & Major film star and original Badboy Robert Mitchum. Also stars very popular actors John Hurt, Lance Henriksen as well the Canadian actor Gary Farmer and Iggy Pop lol
Very well done and quite interesting! If you have not seen it, I recommend it for sure.
Cheers N40

I must be a western movie nut. I have seen most of the movies mentioned, except some of the latest ones. Never could quite get my hands around a "cowboy and alien getting the girl" and riding off into the sunset!

I just realized that there is one I have seen a few times and forgot about.
it's Barbarossa with Willie Nelson and Gary Busey.
Nelson fits the role of a saddle worn desperado perfectly.

Lonesome dove was a great series but it has been many years since I seen it.

Sort of obscure .. More Mountain man movies though.
-The Trap. Filmed in BC.
-Man in the Wilderness. 1971. Was the original Hugh Glass story in a movie. I liked it better than the Revenance version.
Old westerns.
-Alien Thunder. 1974. Starring Donald Sutherland. A real story about the Saskatchewan historical event with Almighty Voice stealing government cattle. Gordon Tootoosis and Chief Dan George in the movie too. Filmed in Saskatchewan.
-Saskatchewan. 1954 . A western starring Alan Ladd and Shelley Winters. The title refers to Fort Saskatchewan in present-day Alberta. Shooting was in Banff National Park, not far from the headwaters of the Saskatchewan River.
Too many others, many mentioned already.
