Pheasant Hunts w/ Pics

One of the best things I've done as a hunter was two years ago I decided to get a good bird dog and start hunting Pheasants. Getting a good dog isnt as easy as a person thinks. Finding Pheasant in an area not known for good bird numbers, and is hunted hard by every Tom, Dick and Harry that thinks he's a Pheasant hunter, is even tougher! This can make for some very long walks...unless you have a really good dog. Heres a couple pictures from one of those hard hunted areas. We have a 3 bird limit after Dec 1. These pics are from 3 different local trips this week. I owe it all to the dog!

Great pics and a cool GSP!
Just a thouht, maybe get him a neoprene vest, my son's dog sure works better when he's warmer, and the vest helps with stuff like thorns....

My dogs and I are one jealous group for sure. We are still morning the passing of our season...

We didn't even get to finish our season , what with louie's back injury.
he is mending well however, and will be goodtogo for some late winter farm birds!

Redfrog - I live in Minnesota, our season closes Jan 3.

Cat - Tried the vest once and wont use it again. The neoprene holds moisture against the dogs body and they freeze twice as fast. We hunt without it and she stays dry, with it and she is soaked. I have a skid plate that we use when there is no snow or moisture. But agin, with any snow or moisture it works against the dog. At least thats my expirience with these short haired dogs. Might be different for a Lab.

Good to see pics of a GSP with pheasants. I need to go get some farmed birds haha.

I was wondering, neoprene does not breath, but I have heard they are good with guys who have labs. I went with a fleece type vest which works well to keep the dog dry and warm except it snags. The neoprene would be more protective. I looked forever for a soft shell made by Columbia that would breath and not snag as much but could not find one in my dogs size. He is funny he actually likes it being put on now. But he is a wimp if out in the cold and he is not going for a run or hunting, when we let him out he runs straight to his heated dog house.

If anyone knows of a good vest that breathes and is field proof let me know? Or what are your experiences with neoprene.

The vest that my son uses for his GSP might be made of something different, because it sure keeps him warmer, but a guy has to go with what works, and if it's better the other way, well , then that's the best!

Thanks P/B. looks like some cold hunting, a lot different than early season.
