Olympic Dream Dead
Well the dream is dead and I'm proud of Albertan's standing up to beaurocrats and politico's with no sense.
Frankly I'd be fine with the Olympics if they used existing infrustructure as is (Granted I have no idea of the shape of it, or what other needs there is) and if Canada could balance the books.
Frankly it would be a good spectical if most of the events were outside in the spirit of the original games. (minus the nakedness) That would nipply.

Amen!
Let's hope that the politicians realize that "No means no"!

Kinda curious what that means too.. My understanding is the Provincial and Federal funding we're dependent on a Yes vote so Spendshi might be handcuffed.
Glad to see common sense won out, was ALOT closer vote than I thought it would be. Wounder how the No side would of done had they had the same funding as the Yes side had? Would of been a little more lopsided I suspect.
Now the IOC can find another sucker to fund their games.
In a perfect world they will start sharing the costs and the profits in the future with nobody lining up to hose anymore and Calgary can go back to the table but I'm certainly not holding my breath.
Now we get to hear from the IOC how we just made a big mistake and won't be able to see our athletes attain glory and win gold on home soil bla bla bla BLA!!

Any word what voter turnout was? I heard a hint on a radio interview that poor voter turnout would be viewed as a "yes" vote by council.

Something in the neighborhood of 40% voter turnout.... More than a lot of people expected.... Bring a good debate to the table and more people than normal want to voice their opinions.

Considering that 40% is more than we can get for most elections, I'd say voter turnout was pretty good.

Voter turn-out was pretty close to the turn-out for the last municipal elections. It would be pretty hard for council to 'interpret' a low turn-out as a reason to reject the results, when they're sitting in their seats because of a similar voter participation.

The dream isn’t dead, it’s just postponed. They hold the Olympics every four years. At some point we’ll be in a place financially and administratively where we’ll be far more confident in submitting a bid, 2030, 2034......

So now City Coucil votes on Friday to seal the deal. Anything short of a unanimous NO vote will be upsetting, but I could see Nenshi still voting yes because he can't help himself when it comes to spending our money.

Come on ya'll, politicians love keeping you, your kids and your grandchildren in debt...
When was the last time you even heard of a city, province, or country that is not in debt...and if they were free of debt, bet it didnt last long.
The matrix works on DEBT!!!!!!money is created due to debt...
Remember budgets balance themselves...RFLMFAO!!

You mustn't have kids who are among the thousands who use that big "toboggan" hill called COP/WinSport that was created because of something that happened 30 years ago.

I think the city should start a GoFundMe page to cover the costs. Appears to work for everything else, then those who want the olympics in Calgary can pay for it!

Nenshi can't support substantial City funding of a new Event Center (Arena) to hold world class concerts and an NHL Hockey Team. A piece of infrastructure that will be transformative to the city of Calgary.
Same Nenshi wants to hold a 2 week international event that will cost the city Billions and possibly tens of billions in unaccounted / unbudgeted expenses. With no new Event Centre but a 5,000 Seat Arena.
Good Grief.
What a hypocrite.

Oh, you must mean the existing facility that is still there and operating at a loss every year? The facility that requires tax dollars from the citizens of Calgary...every single year.

So if you played sports you can't whine about tax dollars being spent on stupid things?

BAHAHA.. You think a "new" arena would benefit Calgarians any more than the current arena? I'm sure those extra couple concerts the city misses out on will definitely pay for the new arena . There's only one small group that it would benefit, and they're already m(b)illionaires.
Nenshi is working on the best deal for Calgarians regarding the new arena. The millionaires don't want to pay for building the arena, the land or property taxes once it's complete. oh, but they don't want us to get any of the profits.

You seem unclear on the concept: the big toboggan hill already exists in Calgary, we already paid for it, and we are continuing to pay for it.
As for sports and entertainment, I support a user pay system. Maybe people will rethink their priorities when they can't finance it with other peoples money.
