Default Grandfather clock repairs ?

I have a wall-mounted, 'grandfather' style, Westminster chimes clock - that won't run anymore. Years ago I used to get it serviced regularly in Calgary by an old Swiss fellow, but he's long gone. I can't find another repair shop for it.

Does anyone know of a competent clock guy that I can take it to in Southern Alberta ? thx

I tried that Joe. I left 2 messages each, with 2 of the guys listed - but no response. I don't think they're 'current' anymore

Just a tidbit of info worth knowing for those of you who own Rolex's, Omega's or the like.
At sometime they all require service. Do not send them to the factory...find a good independent watchmaker who knows his stuff (I've used Geneva Service in Edmonton).
The factory will replace anything that has wear...hands, geartrain parts, etc.
Whether they really need replacing or not (most often not). You get a watch back that looks showroom new...but whose value as a vintage watch is severely downgraded.
For example I recently had a Rolex Datejust overhauled. New crystal (the only thing that is really considered to not be permanent), cleaned, lubed and fresh seals. Nothing else replaced.
A new Datejust is about $8000.
Mine, circa 1978 is worth about (appraised) about $5000.
It would be worth $3000 if sent to Rolex and new parts such as hands put in.
BTW...I ain't rich. This was one of the few items I have that I've made money on...I bought it new from Birks in '78 for....$650.00

Thanks Shooter! If I can't find someone closer to home (Canmore), I'll give him a try!

Last year a Moving company after paying for special handling for my antique family grandfather clock, hired a rookie outfit to deliver it to my home and promptly dropped the clock head down the front steps !!!
the rookies had no insurance...
threat of lawsuit finally got the original hired company to deal on it.

searched alberta wide for someone who could rebuild a 1834 Hindenburo grandfather clock..

A outfit in London England that deals with this type repair (Offical from insurance people) recommended not sending it to them but to a person in edmonton who trained with them and used to work for them...

Max Paquin

fixed mine and it totally retained its value.
PS it was a 6 month wait for the reairs but it was worth it....

That is a heck of a deal. Always liked Rolex watches but by the time I started looking at them they were $5000 or more new and they just didn't keep time enough better than a $300 Seiko, which never requires service outside a new battery once every 8 years. If I could have bought one for a grand or less I would probably own one, I bought guns instead so still worked out fine. Just out of curiosity, how does a collector tell that the hands etc have been replaced?

Thanks so much Marsha! - We spoke with Max this morning, and will be dropping off our clock with him later on this week.
We appreciate your recommendation!

I wondered that myself...it's not as though the hands are going to show wear...it's not like they are out in the open.
But you are right...I definitely could not afford one now.
