Default New to alberta fishing

I have lived in alberta for about 8 years now and i usually would go home to ontario for the summer and get in some fishing but I would rather stay in alberta and do some fishing. What are some good places to fish, anything would be great cause I really have no idea where to fish and what fish are in certain lakes I live in central alberta so any places near there would be awsome.

What are you after species wise? Fly or Gear fishing?
There are some fantastic spots in Central AB that suit every taste.

A good read through the regs will give you an idea of what fish are where. It's a great starting point.

Cheers.

For big water, it ain't that easy in the middle. Lakes like you're used to are easier to find in the North (namely Sturgeon / Snipe combo until July, and Slave forever after). The other stuff we have might let you down a little if you're looking to duplicate ON fishing. However....

I don't generally fish that far south, but I've wanted to try Carson-Pegasus for the trifecta - trout, walleye and pike in a single day....think it'd be worth your while, and if you're on the West side of the QEII, its a quick run up the Whitecourt way to get there. Barely a day trip for you folks.

The further north you get, the less people you see on the water. And the less skilled - I'm lucky if I kill one fish a year these days, even by accident.

Barry Mitchell's "ALBERTA FISHING GUIDE"

Tells you where to go, how to get there and what you may likely catch for just about all water bodies in Alberta.

He also has a book called "Alberta's Trout Highway" (I think) and it is all about the waters along the Trunk Road.

I not to sure on the Alberta Fising guide, its really a half based reg book. Use the alberta regs, find your zone and use google maps. Regs generally tellyou what you can catch "like the 10$ book" and google maps shows you were to go. I am also new to alberta and found the book almost useless.

I had great luck on the Red Deer river and at the resevoirs near brooks. Not a huge trout fan so nothing on that front.

you live near red deer. try the red deer river. havent fished there in a couple years but it use to be good. dickson dam is another good spot. gleniffer is good as well. but i hear trout pond isnt doing so good. its closed for some reason.
- red deer river basically has pike, trout, gold eyes, walleyes and your suckers.

- dickson dam or gleniffer has trout, pike and walleyes that i know of (havent caught anything else there)

- trout pond ...... that says it all.

thats all fishing from shore. if u have a boat then you got more choices close to u. theres sylvan lake, gull lake and so on.... hope that helps you that your basically half hour away from the fun..

Very good advice to start. I highly recommend the Fishing Guide for beginners.
