Transporting a one piece spinning rod

Hey guys,

I may be having buyer remorse

I got a wicked good deal on a 6ft Shimano Clarus spinning rod.

But it's a one piece.

Always preferred two pieces for easier transport, but this was too good to pass up.

Now I'm left with getting it to where I want to go, all while ensuring it and the reel are protected.

What could be an option for me?

Any info is appreciated,

Regardless of how you transport it, buy a good quality rod sock or rod glove, and keep it in that. It protects it and prevents tangles. A good neoprene case for your reel is nice to have too, again, it protects it from dents and scratches and keeps it from getting tangled up.

The best bet is obviously stored securely in your boat's rod locker, or strapped to the floor of the boat, secure under the boat tarp.

If a boat isn't an option, a 6-7' ft rod will pretty easily go into any car or the cab of a truck without being too much of a nuisance.

If I have to transport a bunch of my 1 piece rods and I only have the truck, they go in the cab. If the cab is full of guys or other gear, they get wrapped in a towel or two and placed in the bed of the truck where they won't bounce around and nothing will end up on top of them. Be careful to strap them in though or secure them somehow if they're going in an open box. I've seen a few go sailing out of a truck box (not naming names lol), especially when they have rod socks on them.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially at only 6', I think you'll find it's really not that big an issue. You'll love the rod.

I know the feeling, had to pass on a good deal (one piece) because I knew any money I might have saved would end up going into a new rod when I broke it somehow. Would you be towing a boat? You might be okay just strapping it in on the floor if your under deck storage isn't quite big enough. I'd be hesitant to lay a rod between the driver and passenger seats of a vehicle in case there was an accident, wouldn't want that thing to stick you

A rod case and sock are good for day trips. For longer trips what I have used in the past is a Permatube (sono tube, easy pour tube). You can cut it to the right length and it is quite easy to install a "plug" for both ends. They are incredibly strong and even very weather resistant. You can put your rod in one and it will stay safe while travelling, shipping or just being stored.

Don't feel too bad, if you go to the states you will notice the vast majority of rods are one piece, to them we are the weird ones with our two piece rods. As for transport I just use a rod sock and PVC pipe cut to length.

I don't have a boat so it would be only transported in the back of my truck.
F-150 with 6 1/2 ft box.

The info about socks and tubes is very helpful, I'll look into those.

I have a 9' 6" two piece G Loomis and an antique Series One 5' med/heavy ...both fit nicely in my 5' 6" expandable plastic tube. No reels of course but the tube works perfectly.

I have several one piece rods and keep them in a bazooka style rod case.It has been to Mexico and back with no issues.

I moved to one piece rods a few years ago and haven't regretted it, except for the odd time I quad into a remote lake. I have a 2 piece I use just for that. Plano makes rod tubes that are extendable and can accommodate more than one rod. A 6' is pretty doable in most circumstances. I had a 8' one piece once that was a pain since it had to sit sideways in the truck box (6'6" box).

I use both PVC and ABS tubes for rod storage. The ABS is heavier, but a whole lot stronger - however more expensive. The ABS tube I use is basically identical to Whelen's above. I cut some close cell foam and placed it in the end caps to protect the ferrules and tips. Like above, I cemented one end cap on and used a threaded end for the other. It's waterproof, shock proof, drop and door proof. Works great, and I can store up to 10 rods in one 4" tube.

The PVC tube is your most cost effective option, and can be made in a matter of minutes. I used a PVC when transporting my rods to Mexico this year, as it was much lighter than the ABS, and cheaper as well.

As for your one piece, don't have any remorse at all. One piece rods are exceptional to fish with. No dead spots on the ferrules, and even more bite feel transmission - great for jigging and bottom bouncing. Getting a good deal on one, is something to be celebrated!

I'd check with your local tackle shop, likely your best bet would be The Fishin' Hole.

Rods are often shipped from the manufacturer in really solid cardboard tubes. They're durable, easily cut to size, much lighter than PVC or ABS, and you could probably get one for free. It would be more than adequate for transporting your rod.

Um I am going to have to say that a long rod tube is going to be your best bet other then it riding in the cab of your truck with you. Just please dont put a barbaque on your one piece and try and make it a two piece... Trust me it doesnt fit back....

Central vac pipe with a slot for the leg of the reel. Glue a cap on the tip end and just press the cap on the butt end to keep the rod in the tube. A rod sock will protect the rod finish from rubbing on the plastic tube. Works for me.

It is a Flambeau case and was purchased at Basspro in Vegas about 8 years ago. I just did a quick check and don't see it on Flambeau's website.

Don't think I will sell the case. I got it as a 10 year employment gift and the GLoomis rod and a Stella reel were in the case too. Nice boss.
