Default Decent Bull

Snuck out on Monday for an early morning bull hunt. Terrible pictures but a decent fish for my first bull specific trip of the season, roughly 6-7 pounds and very thick. For anyone hunting big bulls, you don't have a streamer that is too big. Also, this time of year large stonefly nymphs can be surprisgly effective in the right river.

Thanks Highwood. That's my mission this coming weekend.
Any specific technique you used with the streamer?

Into the whitewater below falls, rapids, plunge pools and worked erratically initially. I always dead drift with subtle twitches as well if nothing is being aggressive. Be ready when the streamer hits the water in the foam, hits can be hard and violent. I do occasionally add shot about a foot above the streamer, too close and I find it affects the action, especially on articulated patterns.

Thanks highwood!
Do you even have to try to "set the hook" or does the bull trout do that themselves when they hit?

Set it. Bulls have hard mouths. And by big I mean 4 to 12 inch streamers. I prefer early am.

Nice bull and pic!

Say, you didn't happen to be fishing the Oldman last Saturday morning were you?

Had a solo angler head past our camp and judging by his screaming, sounded like he lost a good one - he was caterwauling on for about 10 minutes.

Caterwauling is the best word ever... had to look it up but it actually means exactly what it sounds like it should mean!!
