I bet that isn't pure bred sauger out of the red. They cross with walleye. They have the spotted dorsal but not the "sauger" look. A pure bred sauger has the skinny profile and the blotchy dark patches. I caught a hawg out of the red deer probably 20 years ago when the record was 5.5 or something but it just had the spotted dorsal otherwise it looked like a wallie. I would like to see that fish. I got mine right in downtown red deer. Good to see some record fish tho either way.Not stirring the pot just curious.

31.5 isn't a record rainbow for Alberta. Maybe a new AFGA record though.

The sauger would be a record by almost a full lb. Wait for the official results I guess.

Actually that was the first thing I thought too. Would love to see a pic. Spotted dorsal and the blotches can be prevalent on a saugeye, along with the absence of the white spot on the tail, but the head shape is most telling.

It's not mine to correct but y'all have another look at the OP. It talks about a record sauger followed by a period and then another sentence describing a rainbow.........that's how I read it.

Pretty hard to tell if it’s a sauger or a walley out of the reddeer they are all very white looking where I fish. I did catch a 30” that I released

Pretty easy to see that that's a walleye, to me. Nice fish

When they are silvery like that how do you tell? What are you looking for?

Black spots on dorsal fin. No white tip on bottom of tail. And more dark blotches on a sauger

Default New Alberta record

I have caught many of each, and that is a walleye in the pic.
