For targets?
I have several ,223, 308 Win,and of course .303 British .

The .223 and 308 are special purpose match rifles for prone shooting with iron sights . The .303 is a Long Branch that I sometimes equip with a Parker Hale 5C sight but most times I use the factory peep .
All of these rifle and cartridges are accurate at 1,000 meters and have been proven so in match competition .

My shooting buddy has a Short barrelled (20") Remington police rifle in .308 Win that is danged accurate at 1,000 meters as well with a Night force ( I think ) scope .
If you are going to compete you will have some restrictions but if you just want to have fun mist well built rifles and cartridges will do find way out there with an occasional modification such as a rail .

Lots of good options for a 1000 yard target shooting. I use 6.5-284, 300wm and 7LRM.

7MM REM MAG,300WSM,.300WIN, 7MM WSM , all of these I shoot 980 with very good results ,plus there fine hunting cartridges ,lots of reloading bullets for either one.My pit where I shot is 980,i am the only guy in there so I use to shot more ,but I plan on doing a lot more this fall,i spend more time shooting between 200 to 500 and sight in at 200 ,but like to reach out some days for the heck of it .

6.5 Creedmoor. Low recoil, short action. Amazing bullet BC. All the comp guys are using 6 or 6.5 short action calibers for a reason.

For practice I use my RBROS 6.5x47 with 130 Bergers at 3000 fps. Zero recoil and extremely accurate. For hunting out to 1000 yds I'd grab my 300 Win Mag shooting 215 Bergers. There's lots of good choices out there. But as said earlier it depends on the purpose of the rifle. If strictly for practice get something that won't burn up a barrel fast. For hunting only; round count doesn't matter much as it will last.

Like beeman said something that won't burn up a barrel to fast,I had a 6.5-06 that lasted about 1500 rounds .I thought it would last about 5 years but got about 2 years out of it.
I would suggest a 6.5 or 7mm in a smaller case for barrel life and ballistics.
I am shooting a 6.5 creedmoor now and its doing great out to 1200 yards, although I would use a something with more umpth if I was planning to shoot game at long range.

My .308 is a plinking gun at a kilometre. My .338LM is a practice gun at a kilometre. Heck, even my.223 makes hits at a kilometre. Like was said above, it's all about what you want to do.

I shoot 308 as I also wanted to keep my cost down with reloading. I've been hearing a lot about 6.5creedmore and now wants to try it. Is it easy to get reloading supplies for it? Are they reasonably priced?

Yes they are,Hornady,Nosler and Lapua are making brass,I have fireformed 22-250 brass also for it and turned out great.I have bin using 139 gr. Lapua Scenars they are about $50 for 100(prophet river) and h4350 powder,IMR4350 works great also.Have had good luck with H380 and hybrid100 but mainly use H4350.

There are lots of options, more so for targets because bullet energy and velocity aren't an issue.
I shoot my 358 Win to 980 yards but I would never shoot at game that far with it.
I shoot with a guy who has a 7mm Rem mag and we were making shots to 1720 yards.
The biggest thing for hunting is to pick a bullet, caliber combination that allows for proper bullet performance on game. Nothing fancy is needed.

Pulled off a 506 yd poke last season with my .308, loaded with 150 Speer boat tails, pretty much the ragged edge of the terminal performance window with that bullet. The deer dropped where it stood, but it was the same diameter in as it was out, both shoulders were busted.

If I were to do it all over again, I'd likely run my .260 Rem in place of the .308, and settle on some LRAB's for pills.(129's show great promise so far)

.300 WIN MAG and 7.62x51 always work well to 1500m/1200m accordingly

My friend shoots competition 1000 and uses .284 in competition and a 7wsm for hunting. A 6br is also a nice caliber.
