Default Boat motor repair?

I have an Evinrude 6HP. Where would you guys suggest getting it tuned up? It runs fine in a barrel but cuts out when under load (pushing the weight of a boat and a passenger). It also has a cracked gas tank (I think I can JB weld it though). Could the cutting out issue be caused by a loss of pressure through the tank leak...it's a hairline crack.? I'm in edmonton. The motor is old...like 1980-85 old. I have some duct tape over the crack right now. It hold the fuel back.

My humble opinion is your carb needs cleaning/adjusting. Losing power under load sure sounds like a fuel delivery issue.

Unless your fuel tank is the old old style that had the plunger on it to pressurize the tank then your tank should be fine.

Tune up also be a good idea. Timing and plugs.

Definetly not Free Spirit Marine, stay clear!

They ripped me off last year with my Evinrude 9.9 repair and tune-up.

I've heard great things about Sherwood Marine & Trail.

Try some SeaFoam in you're fuel. Look it up on Google. I have an old Johnson that had trouble idling, and it smartened right up! Also use it in my vehicles as well now. Best tuneup in a can you can get!

I think your fuel line between the engine and tank is "sucking air". It has a tiny crack or something of that nature and under load it will not maintain enough vacuum to pull the fuel from the tank into the carburetor. It is a fairly common problem with aged hoses on outboards.

Had a similar issue with my old jonhson 6 sea horse. The ignition coils go bad, it's a common problem.

When I was reading this post a couple of hours ago, this is pretty much what I was thinking.

x3 That was the first thing that came into my mind. There was a fella out at the lake that had the same issue as what Drake described and it was a combination of a leaky fuel hose and a gasket where it hooked up to the tank leaking letting air in. Once replaced it worked like a charm. Depending on where the crack in the tank is, repairing that might just fix things too.

I have not had a small engine repaired/serviced at Free Spirit but have had my larger ones serviced at Free Spirit for the past few years and have been happy with the service.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I have had nothing but positive results.

For the love of God, anywhere BUT Shipwreak!

Unless of course you don't care about ever getting it back or how much it'll cost.

Yes you can but finding them might be a problem. I don't think that's your problem. Don't get used ones or you could have a worse problem.

Also look at http://forums.iboats.com/forum.php

I have ordered a few things from recreational power sports. They have been top notch and always ready to help. Being new to boating I went to ship wreck marine to order a few things. It took 3 weeks to get a gasket set in from Vancouver. Constant follow up by me and zero returned calls, being told to come into the store as we are too busy to talk on the phone to check for your item was my last straw. When I walked into the store the store was dead. You could fire a cannon through it and not hit anyone. Sufficient to say my order had not shown up after 2.5 weeks and was still “in transit”.

When I went to recreational power sports they had an item in Vancouver and it arrived in 2 days and actually called me. I was also able to order some older components for a 76 Evinrude motor. They had them to me with in a day or two..

Never again will I set foot in shipwreck marine.

Thanks Newb...:0)

That was the next question I was going to ask...How to test them..LOL
