No morels yet, but I did find a couple of delicious Great Western Puffballs the other day, that sacrificed themselves beside a BBQ rib-eye!

Cut Morel in half lenghth wise, scoop in dill /cream cheese, put back togther.
Dust in seasoned flour and pan fry in butter.
Although its a still a frying recipe it worked great for me. It's very rich so more so an appetizer.

I found a good patch of false morels while doing some shed hunting. I'll have to go check my other spots to see if the blacks are out yet. It's a little early yet, I usually don't start looking until the last week of may.

Western Giant Puffballs don't fruit until towards the end of the summer because it takes the first half of the season to develop a large underground network of mycelia which enables the production of such large reproductive bodies.
What you have, assuming it is a recent photograph, is one of several species of spring puffballs, some of which are delicious or bland and some which are either bitter or have a metallic flavour.
Young spring puffballs which are white in the center and do not have a stalk are good to go as far as I know.

No morels yet, checked my spot today and I found the ground is way to dry. There are some other mushrooms growing but not many...! I think if we get the promissed rain for May long wknd, then they should be out for the last wknd of May.

Why thanks BeeGuy, I learned something new today!
That photo was taken a week ago, so they must be 'Spring Puffballs'. And they tasted pretty good, fried in butter.

morels
Suprisingly, I went for a walk Monday morning and I did manage to find 12 (small) Black Morels and about 20 Verpas. They are just starting. This rain tonight followed by some heat and it could be good.

Join the Alberta mycological society, and go on some of their 'forays'. It's fun, tasty, and you'll learn everything you ever wanted to know about wild mushrooms!
They have a great website..

I found about 50 of them yesterday along the bow river. I went out for maybe an hour in the morning before our branding. they were a great treat and went very well with prairie oysters.

Morels are dfeinately out up here in Peace River. I joined the Peace River Mycological Society for their first ever foray. I am happy to say We were all successful. I found a nice basketful. Enough for a couple of tasty meals. We were in an area that was a forest fire last year.
Here are a couple of pics. The second pic is of a trio of morels I found. The largest was almost 4 inches long.

The morels are starting to pop out around Grande Cache. Not quite big enough to pick but the numbers are there.
Some one had placed a couple of bird houses in one of my mushroom patches and I noticed a creepy critter watching me.
A packrat I believe

I think it's actually a Northern flying squirrel.

Anyone around Canmore been finding any yet? I've been checking my patch a little south west of here for the last few weeks and finally found a few nothing to write home about. The ground seems dry and not sure if it's a bit early yet.
Opinions?
