Pickerel
I looked for the first post but unable to find it.
In Manitoba and NW Ontario , there are two generations of fisherman
my Grandfather ( lived to 96 ) and my father who always called
Walleyes ; Pickerel . In one of the Infisherman Magasines from years ago
there was an article about chain pickerel , according to the Lindner boys
they were rare compared to pike ,and found mostly in small eastern US lakes . This obsession with the word Walleye has only come about
in the last 15 years or so and is definitely an American thing .
It goes with Backtrollers , electronics , live bait rigs , structure fishing
etc.
I'd love a good feed of pickerel ... i meant walleyed pike ...

Did u ever think that lots of people have just grown acustom to calling them pickerel when they really do mean walleye due to the fact that the people they grew up fishing with refered to them as pickerel. We all know what they mean so why point out something as obvious as you just have. So its the equivalent of someone calling a pike a jack, or burbot an eelpout/Ling cod/lawyer, we all know what fish they are talking about.

In some parts of its range, the walleye is also known as the walleyed pike, yellow pike or pickerel (esp. in English-speaking Canada),

(From Wiki)
Pickeral has 2 definitions.... one refers to the eastern pickeral which are in the Pike family.... Esocidae...
The other refers to a walleye and is actually colloquial usage refering to the spines (Picks) on their back.
However the common name for "walleyed pike" is itself a misnomer as it is in the perch family Percopsidae.
Thus the use of Latin names by biologists to remove confusion.

It is a regional thing.... those that think calling a walleye a pickeral wrong are from Ontario usually!.....
That explains a whole lot!....
You call yourself BUD, Your momma called you something else I am sure, I call you a grumpy old fart, other people think you are an icehole....
Guess what we are all right!.....
People calls them like they see them!.. HAAAAAAAAAA!

Kind of reminds of this poem....
It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
Though all of them were blind,
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.
The First approached the Elephant
And, happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl:
"God bless me, but the Elephant
Is very like a wall!"
The Second, feeling the tusk,
Cried, "Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me 'tis very clear
This wonder of an Elephant
Is very like a spear!"
The Third approached the animal
And, happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Thus boldly up he spake:
"I see," quoth he, "The Elephant
Is very like a snake!"
The Fourth reached out an eager hand,
And felt about the knee:
"What most the wondrous beast is like
Is very plain," quoth he;
"Tis clear enough the Elephant
Is very like a tree!"
The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
Said, "Even the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most;
Deny the fact who can:
This marvel of an elephant
Is very like a fan!"
The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the beast to grope
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
That fell within his scope,
"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant
Is very like a rope!"
And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong.
Though each was partly in the right,
They all were in the wrong!

Not sure what this is constructively adding to this forum. Thread closed.
