Default Seeing Coyote near highways

Yesterday afternoon I drove from lloydminster to Calgary via Edmonton and was seeing quite a few coyote. Saw 7 from Lloyd to Edmonton and another 3 on QE2 before running out of light. Considering that I was driving and had to keep my eyes on the road, that seems like allot. There were probably twice as many that I missed. Are other folks seeing alot out there?
Tomorrow I'm driving Calgary to moose jaw and will keep a scan for them to see if south Alberta is the same with lots.

I am guessing dead gophers on roads.

I saw nine between Lethbridge and Calgary on Monday. Just south of Nanton there was a group of five.

I see them off the highway almost always, doesn't really matter what time of year. Last December I saw 5 of them right off the #9 by Irricana.

Bitches in heat this time ever of the year so you will see more coyote movement.

It's that time of year.

Breading season for Coyotes; snow is hard, blocking access to mice; more road kill with the gophers venturing out.

It all adds up to more sightings.

The breeding took place mid-February so it'd have to be a second wave of breeding if it's that. Around here they were pretty dumb about that time. I'm thinking that the coyotes by the highway were on the scrounge for easy meals of dead gophers, etc. They learn fast as to how to get an easy meal.

My guess would be dead deer from vehicle hits. Easy meal for them.

Coywolf spotting anyone? The average male coyote tops out at 45 lbs, which is close to half the size of a big Labrador or Golden retriever.
When I spot coyotes I am always asking myself whether they truly are coyotes or the hybrid which is becoming so prevalent in Alberta.
Coywolf characteristics
-often grow to 75-85 lbs (ie the size of my golden)
-rounder ears
-fuller tails
-will hunt in packs or in pairs frequently (coyotes do this to a lesser degree) and as such can take down deer etc
-have relative lack of fear of humans....
-In Okotoks 3 winters ago the "coyotes" were taking deer within the town, including on the Crystalridge pond behind my house. I would attach photos if I could figure out how
-this year, no coyotes in town, lots out side of town

A lot of crops got snowed under last fall. Not uncommon to see 2 or 3 coyotes in those fields hunting mice.

The drive to moose jaw and back to Calgary last weekend wasn't as fruitful for coyote spitting. I don't think for lack of 'yotes compared to further north rather the howling wind. Started seeing them (OK 3 only) by swift current as the wind was starting to die down. Of course then it was near dark. Non seen on drive back, wind on full bore again.
This weekend I don't have high expectations as travelling to Montreal. Don't think I can spot them from the plane. D

Might see some urban cougars on your flight, but hopefully no coyotes...
