Quail in or Near Edmonton

Hi,

Used to purchase Quail from a breeder here in Edmonton for my pet snake. She ended up moving away. So I'm wondering if anyone knows where I can pick up some Quail for relatively cheap. Must be àdult size, and already killed, the whole bird intact.

Any suggestions would help, might go down and speak to my butcher this weekend.

Unless you guys may know her, I lost her number after my phone broke, she used to live off Yellowhead and 97st, sold mice, rats, quail, even rabbits, all frozen.

I don't have quail anymore but I didn't know this was a thing. How much do quail usually go for and how big are they? When I had them I could have hooked you up with lots of them. They were prone to self injury. The dog ran by the pen once and they all started flying for the walls. Once the dust settled nine of them had broke their necks. I think I lost over 50 in a couple months.

The snake hobby in Edmonton isn't as big as it is in other places, and most people feed Quail once in a while but I had all my big guys eating Quail, used to go through about 10 Quail a month. I believe she used to get them from Toronto and would sell them to me at $5 for 2 and other times $8 for 2. Never really understood how she made money like that lol. I believe they were juvenile in size, not full grown adults but about the size of your hand.

My parents neighborhood here in the city have a few that run wild and they definitely look like the type of bird to fly into a wall haha.

If you ever get back into it or know someone who does, I would buy the damaged ones haha.

Why dont you just go "collect" a few black birds/starlings etc etc?

Lool that didn't cross my mind, but I guess that would be the cheaper and funnier way of getting food haha.

I'll have to look into the nutritional value of a Pigeon vs a Quail, I think it would work. But aren't pigeons fairly expensive? What were you thinking in regards to pricing?

There would probably be some concern around the possibility of the snakes ingesting lead pellets.
OP would be better off finding someone who needs to get them out of their barn/warehouse etc. and netting them at night.

Talk to the gang at Beaverhill auction out of Tofield.Was there at a sale last week and there was alot of quail,bobwhite and chukars.They probably can set you up.

Yeah that's exactly the issue, the lead.

I'll keep looking around, found a few people a few hours out of the city, just got to find someone who makes the occasional trip to Edmonton once every few months or so.

The japenese ( coturnix ) quail? or the smaller button quail? I would have a dozen Japs or so in a month but a ways away.

Check on kijiji, also Bry-conn Developments in Adrossan, they supposed to have a bunch.
