Pine lake was 12.5" on the north end. Shacks are already set up. No luck getting any bites tho.

Everyone was walking out. There is also a large ice heave going north south so it might be a while before people are driving on.

Anyone want to guess how much ice was made from Thursday midnight to this morning? There are calculators online but they all seem too high to me.

My best guess is 2-3 inches a day depending on the lake and a 7-8 inch average increase in ice depth over the this time. Snow cover is minimal still in Central I bet.

Still going to be a below average weeks so I suspect driving on most Central lakes should not be an issue come the weekend.

An old neighbor of mine works with a co. that builds the ice roads in the north and he told me that once the lake is ice shore to shore it will grow 1 inch every 24 hours as long as the temp is below 0 no matter if 10 below or 20 it grows 1 inch per 24.

I’m having trouble believing that. Wouldn’t the ice be 10 feet thick if this was true? Colder temps is irrelevant to ice growth?

Maybe this an average rule for a specific area, and maybe 0 is Fahrenheit (-17°c)? 1 inch in 24 hours seems like a heck of a lot regardless of the rest of that, and certainly not for -1°C.

Clearly many variables to ice growth and zero chance of 1 inch per 24 hour regardless of temperature. Regardless, after this cold snap there will be plenty more ice than prior. I fished north central AB on Jan 5th, there was 15 inches where I was. If I go again later this week I'll let you know how much change there is.

Edmonton has an average of 83 days a year that the temperature doesn’t get above freezing. The majority of those have to be after local lakes freeze over. You would have to factor in how many days it got warm enough to reduce ice, which isn’t +1° I’m sure.
I think somewhere along the line the accurate numbers got altered in this rule. I’m not sure why I’m trying to make sense of it, lol.

I would say near infinite variables, or at least enough to make any kind of general, reliable golden rule impossible.
Also I’m certain ice doesn’t grow at the same rate throughout any body of water. Wind, snow cover, currents, water composition, lake geography, biosphere, etc.
I’ve wondered how much the number of holes drilled into an area affects ice thickness. It certainly has some effect on the water temperature, yet is likely minimal on most water bodies.

Sylvan Lake 2 weeks or so ago, around 11'', yesterday 15''-16'', and there were a few nights of -40C or lower, but the lake was covered in snow. I was expecting the ice to be thicker.

Was out there yesterday. I measured 18 inches where we were on the north end. Lots of vehicles and trailers moving around on the ice.

read that Newell was 17" in spots. I would definitely think Kinbrook and JFB would be at least driveable right now. I'm off to a beach for next week, but once we get back, I'm STOKED to get back out on the southern reservoir ice and hopefully be able to drive right to the spot!

There was a truck on the north side ~100 m out the weekend before the cold snap, I assume he drove on from the boat launch.

I was out on the 8th & measured 15” of ice in deep water. It had grown 1.75” in 2 days. So hopefully it should be 18-20” by now.
