Anyone know if the Alberta SRD government hiring freeze is being lifted?

All of government in Alberta is still under the hiring freeze. SRD included.

They still are able to hire wage positions but all full time positions have to be approved at the Deputy Ministers office.

DO, thanks for the reply.

Son read a report and it said that AB needs over 1200 FWO's for ideal coverage and at present, there are only 128. Very sad.

Default Hiring Freeze

Techicaly the are calling it a hiring "restraint" (for what its worth). 57 jobs up there now...

https://www.jobs.alberta.ca/jobs-dynamic.html

You cant really search them by ministry, but if you do the keyword search and use "Sustainable Resource Development", you get about half a dozen jobs back in your search (but a few of them don't look like SRD).

Are there seriously only 128 officers in Alberta. That blows my mind. How the heck are 128 people supposed to cover hundreds of thousands of square km of land.

Think he was talking ONLY FWO's (not including CO's)

I am going to ask him where he read that report--will get back to you with more info if I can.

The numbers are accurate. Its been that way for a long time. I think there are about another 100 or fewer CO's with Provincial Parks. When times are good there is funding. When it comes to belt tightening it comes out of environment first.

I took the course to become a F&W Officer back in the late 80s, and the fact that there was always budget constraints and few full-time positions available made me choose a different career path. Things haven't changed, and probably won't in the future.

I honestly believe F&W is the first budget to get cut. Followed immediately by the rest of SRD.

Yes, and when you look at other provinces, Manitoba for example, they have FULL TIME on site park patrol officers (note multiple). Makes a person wonder just where Alberta government priorities really are. Actually, I know where they really are--in the oil and gas royalties--all other provincial conservation efforts are swept under the carpet.

Not saying that oil and gas are not important (hubby works in this field as well)
just saying that a better balance is needed.

I had the same experience. Took the course at LCC - Lethbridge Community College - in the mid 80's, and graduated with some very high marks. Worked one summer with Fish and Wildlife as a "Student Officer".

Got a full time job with another agency, but kept applying to Fish and Wildlife for a full time position. After several years, several attempts, and some unsuccessful interviews, had to give up . When you're making good money, gaining seniority, and pensionable service it was no longer viable to make a career change.

To this day, I still regret not hanging in longer, however when one has a wife and family, stability and a steady income was more important.
