Default More Trout vs Bigger Trout

If you had to pick one, would you prefer catching more or bigger trout?

I said more....more with size limit equals my second vote in a few years, bigger and more bigger....end of the day if your catching it's great, if they are small pullout of that area and relocate to another area...a lake has little ones will have big ones but people get hung up on an area loaded with multiple bits, hits, strikes all being small, as entertaining as it is you gotta relocate and drop a notch to fishing and not catching...up your chances of a big one...

Depends who I'm fishing with. Just me, I'll go for size. With my kids or new fishers, I'll go numbers.

About 2009 at a Provincial Fisheries Roundtable, the attendees were asked to rank the issues important to tbem. The top two:::: Illegal Perch Stocking and Trout Lake Management for larger trout. The attendees at the Roundtable represented AF&G, TU, Northern Lights tying club, Edmonton Oldtimers Fishing Club, Walleye Council and on and on. A broad range of fishing related groups.

Below is the policy document produced by Fisheries.

http://aep.alberta.ca/fish-wildlife/...Sep28-2011.pdf NOTE: some of the above is out of date - C&R at Beaver Lake is an example.

And here is where the Rocky Mountain area is now

http://aep.alberta.ca/fish-wildlife/...Jun04-2014.pdf

The question that should be asked is why 15 boats at Beaver each day and maybe one evey two days at Struble Lake.

Don

I will always be a proponent of the Quality Stocked Fisheries. There are IMO,not enough of the QSF'S.The reg's have been put in place to allow these area fish to grow. With out the reg's,they would soon revert back,to the Struble lake type.A prime eg. would be,the depogall of the Tiger trout stockings.Regulation could not protect them.Advisories asking people to limit there catch.Resulted in a SLAUGTHER Shame...

There are days when I'd rather spend 8 hours fishing with the chance to only catch a couple of fish, as long as they're big, and other days where I'd rather spend that 8 hours catching a whole bunch of small ones. Depends on my mood I guess. Overall, I'd rather catch some good, quality fish, even if it means fewer of them.

Bigger is better, specially when you consider that often times your catching lots of fish, they tend to be carbon copies!

I would have to also say bigger, last time I was out I was catching little 6-8" ers and you would hardly know they were there, even on light gear ... I think its the drag screaming which swings the scales for me!

Without a doubt bigger.

I like to catch lots some days too but even then they need to be around 14 inches to be worth catching imo.

Agree with Sam and would like to see a couple more quality fisheries in the south as well.

Size matters. I'll walk all day long for 1 nice fish. As one of the posts above though if I'm with kids or a new fisher, I'd go numbers.

I answered more, for the simple fact that I don't get out fishing enough.

I rarely catch trout that are under 10" and rarely catch any that are over 19".
That being said, I sometimes catch 40-50 fish in an outing, with the mixture of fish being 10" - 14" on average with the odd slab included.
I choose catching 40-50 fish that are 10"-14" over catching 1 or 2 or 3 fish that are 19+". Especially on light lines. No brainer to me.

If I was catching only, say, 1/2 dozen or so, smaller fish, then yes, I would probably choose "larger fish".

The bigger the better. One or two 18 to 20 inchers beats dozens of 10 to 14 inchers any time!

I vote for more, bigger fish.
20+/day over 18" sounds like a good target

Both we all love to catch lots and generally when the catch ratio is higher the odds of a big one are greater. That being said having gone through the phases of lots then bigger then trophy hunting. You get to a point where you just want to enjoy the day afield with good company even if its just you. Catching a fish isn't do or die but you're no longer disappointed if you don't. Also the tug really is the drug. Ever take a newbie trolling or bottom fishing? They always want to hold the rod. Even a small fish awakens a spark in all of us if even for just a second.

Nope. Not if you're using light line.

Twist 2 - 3wt. lines together. Maybe that will help load your 6wt. Ya just gotta be creative.

Definitely bigger. When I moved out here to interior BC a few years ago and made the transition to primarily stillwater fishing I was happy to catch a few small guys in a day just to make sure I was finally starting to figure it out. But now after i've started to figure my **** out and which lakes are home to these bigger fish i'd take a single big boy over 40 small fish any day. Having a big Kamloops rainbow on a chironomid is just way too fun.

Depends on the the type of trout and type of water we are talking about. If it were stream fishing for bows, cutts, specks etc I'd prefer bigger. Lakes with average sized fish larger than most streams? More.

I panicked and clicked on "more", but when I really get reflective, I'm not sure that's entirely true. The rush from landing a big fish is palpable. I took note of my physical state the other day after getting a largish fish to the net... I was breathing fast, shaking a little, and had a smile as big as the moon. So, the real answer for me is, it depends on a lot of things; my mood, who I'm with, where I'm fishing, what species, and even down to what my previous outing(s) was like.
