Default Ruffys

They never cease to amaze me.

A friend and I were target shooting on some crown land by Cynthia today getting ready for November. After he shot my 30-06 three times, a ruffy came out of the trees right beside our target and checked it out. Stunned creature.

I hunt 338, last year they were everywhere, I have been out twice so far this year and have seen 6.

Managed one shot with a miss.

I saw um... About 12-15 during the day two days ago. I was wishing I had my .22 instead of my bow. I generally dislike losing arrows on grouse when I'm supposed to be moose hunting instead. Maybe I should get out the slingshot and toss it into the pack like I used to do.

You guys are doing better than me.

Went out yesterday to 406 and checked 2 different spots where I saw 1 each last year. Nothing.
Then walked new areas and didn't see 1.

When I went out on opening day and I flushed 1 within the first 15 minutes and then shot 1 Spruce a few minutes later as it was chilling on a log.

I've never really seen more than 1 Grouse at a time. lol

Buy a couple judo points and some flu-flu arrows. That's what I always scare grouse with during bow season. I say scare, because I have yet to kill one with the judo points, but it is not for lack of trying. It's so tough to weave an arrow through all the cover, but it's sure fun trying!! Here's one of my misses from last week... I just missed his head! But had to shoot through about a 3" gap at 15 yards. It was so close, yet so far away!!

I always carry a judo, but even with it, if you want to lose lots of arrows shoot at grouse.

If I had a Bow, I was in striking distance of the Spruce I shot:

I haven't seen this many in the last 25 years. We have been seeing coveys of 6 to 12 both ruffies and spruce hens...

Nice old shotgun there I noticed. Is that a Stevens or a remmy wingmaster? Nice grouse too.

Ditto! I cooked one up last Saturday - not without some trepidation as I have bad memories of some late-season ones that didn't quite taste so good. This one turned out amazing.

Found lots of ruffies down here too! Harvested my limit on sunday, made breaded spicy chicken fingers. Man was it tasty, not to mention strolling down a trail with a shotgun in nice weather, good times!

Yesterday, After 5 hours of walking in the bush, Finally dialed into one just hanging out on the ground.

Then tried out a new area and had a couple flush on me just as I was starting to lose daylight.

Of the 2 I have shot this year, I've noticed upon opening up their gizzards that they are feeding primarily on clover and berries right now. Haven't seen any aspen buds or pine needles as of yet.

Nothing in nature is cut and dried ... probably many have started to gut a moose and looked up to see a couple of bull's checking it out ... or the time I was walking a cutline and a quad rider showed up whineing about the lack of moose ...after a quick b.s cession we parted and as headed he headed out 500 pound's of moose meat decided to check out my 94 !!!

Default Which Species Had The Darker Meat

Just curious which bird species had the darker meat? Of the three cleaned on the rock the middle one looks much darker.

Ruffies are light and spruce are the dark meat.

Went out and spent about 8 hours in the bush on 402 the other day... saw absolutely nothing. I figure I'm probably just terrible at this... Anyone have any tips or locations they wanted to share - I'd love a PM!

I shouldn't say I saw 'nothing' - walking an old logging road came around a bend and was about 50 feet away from a massive (to me at least - my experience is limited - but giant antlers) Bull Moose.

If anyone has a tag for that sucker in 402 - PM me cuz I saved the GPS/Google maps location and would happy if it helps someone.

Was out in 328 today and got one ruffy. Saw a few but lots are drumming. Heard at least 6 different ones on one trail. Also heard the strangest sound in the bush, came home and researched and it was a lynx. That will put the hair on you neck up.

There was a very healthy ruffy population out west of Rocky Mountain House last year, however this year it seems there's not nearly as many.

Got 3 Ruffies yesterday.
Had about 7 or 8 flushes.
Having better luck this year than last, but maybe its just because its my second year of hunting.
The 1st ruffie I shot yesterday was HUGE

sns2 and Stinky, we have never found a way to make spruce grouse palatable. Have any recipes to share?
