I usually use whatever i have on and tie a flourocarbon leader that is 8 pound and that usually does the trick for me.

I use 8 lb main line and then either 6 or 8 lb flouro leader. Haven't been snapped off yet this year

I prefer 10 lb main with 4 or 6 # leader. I find whites can be fairly line shy. I've noticed the later in the season the greater the chances they will be line shy....Unless ling are spawning, then they just don't seem to care most days.
From my experience lighter tackle and playing the fish produces better than larger tackle and trying to horse the fish in. The mouths are just too soft and unless they are aggressively feeding they don't inhale the hook like other species.

8 or 10 lb Magnathin clear. Works all season and doesn't get really stiff when cold.

10 lb braid with 8 lb fluoro line leader. If you want to downsize just use tippet instead of line(8 lb fluoro tippet is about same size as 4 lb fluoro line).
