hey cam i would say yes you will need and extension, i was at gull on wed and had to dig down another few inches of the hard packed snow just enough to break through. my jiffy bottomed out and even though i had my extension with me i just did alittle digging just enough to break through.

we had like 1 inch to play with on the auger we were in about 15FOW and tip up 20FOW. we just went back and seen 8 whitefish and kept 3 more.
the best color for the whites on the bells are gold followed by yellow and ect dont use red over 14 FOW cause it disapears.
tip up we had a 12 inch herring with 1 stike my first strike on my tip up and i set it too fast...

Go to Castaway sports or GTI in Sylvan Lake and ask for bells for fishing. Castaway is closed Sundays. At GTI they have them on the counter where you pay. The helpers may not know the name but they are located in a plastic tray and it contains a lot of colorful lures. The bells are shaped like a bell and have a treble hook through the bottom. They are the hottest lure for whites and burbot at this time of the year. No luck at norglenwold try rr23. As far as depth is concerned anywhere from 8 to 25 feet will work. Bounce them off the bottom and hold it still for 3 to 5 seconds, bounce again, hold, etc. Vary the routine if necessary. They work. PM me if you need help. I a going fishing early tomorrow morning but not on Sylvan this time. BEL
