Default '78 55hp evinrude... How tight should the propeller be?

Like it says. We got a used boat and motor. The prop is quite loose, as it there is 1/8 inch of play and the nut is so loose I can move it with one finger. The cotter pin is the only reason it doesn't move.

I can't seem to find anything online as to what the torque spec is, or if it's tighten hard, release and them bottom out the nut.

I'll likely have more questions going forward.

I always just snugged mine up to where I could put the cotter pin in.
Never lost a bottom end or a prop.

Thanks cat.

Does anyone know if these old rigs have a charging system, stator or whatever? How might I identify such a thing, visually?

Stator. It will be under the flywheel. You can see it if you look under there from the underside.

Yup, like mentioned, the stator supplies power for the ignition system and charging system.
Most older outboards only put out 9 amps so you can't run to much electronic stuff.

I guess my question is surrounding the stator (if I have one) and its ability to restore charge to the deep cycle battery after start up, if at all.

And am I able to hook up a voltmeter to the battery terminals to find out if it's putting anything out? Like testing a car alternator? Sorry I'm not super keen on these systems.

Yes it will charge the battery, to test use a volt meter on the battery.
