It is from my new Anschutz 1727 repeater in 22RF. Left hand Fortner action with a 23" heavy barrel and sporter stock.

I own a Greener Martini with a Ruger no 1 barrel in 45-70. Not a true Ruger no1 but I can't complain about the Rugers barrel great shooter.

Ruger #1
I'm not an expert. I shoot a Tropical #1 in 375 H+H. Easy to shoot and very accurate. I would buy another #1 any day.

I just love my Ruger N01 in 22-250. With handloads, it shoots sub-MOA. Mine has taken its share of ground pigs.

Brand new from a dealer is $1800 plus gst and shipping. And then comes the quality of the wood and caliber.

They have gone way up in price the last few years. I personally would not pay $2000 for one but I'm sure some will. There were at least 3 at the gunshow this weekend $1100-1400 good to excellent condition. 9.3x62, 270weatherby, and 300 wby I believe.

I almost bit on a 7-08 a while back, when it seemed as though they really were going to kibosh the #1 this year. But at the price level they are at, I can't justify it with what they put on for wood. It made me hesitate long enough for the truth to come out from Ruger on it. Which made me pass on it.
How can I justify that against this, a highwall in .223win, which you can't get from Winchester, either:

Ruger #1"s are nice. But I like external hammers such as thosenof then1885 or B78.

Where can I find one of these elusive rifles. I have never seen one in real life. I would love to handle one to see how it fits etc... At least I would be in a better position to decide on one or the other.

Prophet river brings in a lot but they are over at Lloydminster. Dunno how far of a drive that is for you. I can tell you that the 1A balances about 3 inches in front of the trigger guard and makes for wonderful off hand shooting balance between your hands. Rather slim and nice to carry in either hand as there is nothing sticking out on either side. Totally ambidextrous. The ejection is adjustable from simply sliding the cartridge out for grabbing or throwing it out quickly. Most casings get stopped by the safety metal and stay in the channel if the rifle is held straight up and down. If you want it to toss completely clear then tip the rifle to the side just a bit and it will fly right by.

A very simple job to file the front of the safety down just a little and there is no more interference

Im tossing that idea around. Part of me cringes at filing off the bluing and also I havent decided completely if i want to do it. I kind of like the hard stop to grab the brass. Ive got a habit of tipping over for ejection when im hunting.

No problem to hit it with a blue stick afterwards.

This is what I did a few years ago on one of my fathers (later sold, and restocked - as shown- by the current owner). One of these days when I'm all caught up on some projects I'm going to do a full custom #1 with a few other ideas I have in my head.

^ Now that's some nice wood! When you slide the safety back does it leave a little hole?

No hole. To be clear that wood was installed by the current owner - not me.

Is that a whole new action or what was the process for getting the safety into a smooth inlet like that? That is really superb looking!

It's a factory stainless Ruger #1
I designed and machined a new safety and recessed it into the tang instead of riding on top like the factory version.

I have only ever owned one number 1, a recent 243win that I purchased new for under $1400.The wood is about as plain as a 2x4 from the lumberyard, but the rifle just happens to shoot a load from a previously owned 243win around moa, so I didn't even bother with load development. I also own an 1885 in 270wsm, and it shoots the first load that I tried 1/2 moa, and I actually prefer the 1885 over the number 1. However the 1885 has a heavy octagon 28" barrel, so it is a fairly heavy rifle. I did own a lightweight 1885 in 243win, but the trigger was heavy, and with such a light rifle, I didn't shoot it as well as I would have liked. I actually don't shoot either of my single shots as often as I should, and both will likely end up being surplused in the not too distant future. Of the recent number 1 rifles that I have seen, Epps has a few in 275 Rigby that seem to have a little better wood than most new number 1s, and I do like the cartridge.

I purchased my B78 from a forum member. I don't know which store has either the 1885 or B78 though. You'd be most welcomed to handle and shoot my B78 if you're ever down south. It's a 30-06.

Thank you for the offer.
I just walked away from a 7mm No.1b Simply because I not sure I would like the 7mm for recoil etc... Now you guys have got me interested in B78 or 1885. I just can't find one to touch. Theres a B78 on CGN but he is in Ontario, and I won't send cash without seeing the gun + I already have a 243.
I'll just keep looking until the right one begs to be taken home.

I have an 1885 that you could handle, but it has the heavy 28" octagon barrel, so it is heavier than I would want for a rifle that I would carry around all day, Perhaps someone in the Edmonton area has a lighter weight B-78 or 1885, that you could handle.
