Default Help catching whitefish

I was at Mcgregor lake yesterday trying to catch perch and pike. Drilled many holes, saw no Perch and landed a few pike.
Every time I drilled a new hole and either looked in or put the camera I saw big whitefish. I tried a small vertical jig with a maggot but couldn't even get them to look at it.
Does anyone have a suggestion as how to land these guys ?

Bounce the jig off the bottom. Often the range in motion greatly impacts them. Also I tend to like small yellow wire worms with a maggot.

russian hook -

Teardrop shape is ok too. In February the lingcod are spawning and the whitefish follow them around eating the lingcod eggs. The lingcod eggs are copper colored so copper is a good color in February.

Default Small hook/minnow

We have been catching at least a few every time out all winter on just a hook and minnow. When we see them come in we drop it down and jig a bit and lift up and let it flutter down. Most of the time they don't go after it when it is moving. Trick seems to be is they like to pick it up off the bottom so we just leave it sit and they go down and attack it. Don't know if it is the magical answer but has been working for several weeks now for us whitefish newbies. A bunch of experimenting on the camera is how we ended up there. Maybe try that and other things and watch their reaction then go from there. Sure helped us catch them. Not our main target but since we see them every week we figured we may as well try catching them and we are. Pretty tasty too.

my experience with white fish is:
it behavior totally depends on weather, in some days i am getting 5-10 good whites, another just nothing. It bites better later in spring.
On some lakes whites doesn't pay any attention to any bites, it eats some small creatures on a bottom, whites or how Russians and Scandinavians called it "Sig" have very delicate mouth, so extreme attention has to be paid when bringing it up to the hole.
I love catching them. they are delicious too
