Be prepared to drive lots. The cow elk along the southern edge of the base is the largest/usually easiest to find. From my experience down there, most elk are harvested in the morning and that afterwards the herd runs into the safe zones.
Military was very professional. Fish and Wildlife was out in force. Take a garbage bag for the head (which is required to be submitted). Be very aware of where you are relative to other hunters, some feel that shooting from 400 yards at a herd when individuals are at 100-200 yards is acceptable. Some individuals will also be herd shooting, so you could potentially harvest an elk without having fired a shot.

you probably wont be walking very much. the base is 1700 square kilometres. most of which hunters have access to. you could get out of your truck and walk for 60km and not see a single elk. have a full tank of gas, drive the roads and trails until you see a herd, and pull out the binos and see if they have headgear, if they do, get back in your truck and repeat until you find a cow, then make your stalk. definitely be aware of the other guys, after me and my dad got his elk last year, the area the herd went off to sounded like world war 3.

Yup drive drive drive. Then get up on some of the big hills and glass. Thats how we were successful last year. The herds liked the southern edge the best it seems.
Follow speed limits and listen closely to the rules in the morning meetings. They will punt you for infractions.

I've also been drawn for the first week also. First time Suffeild, first time elk hunter. Booked hotel already, now to shoot the MZ and the .308 and get comfortable again.

and how does one apply for this? or is it already to late?
because this is all i found online.
"To participate, hunters must purchase a Quota Licence that is only available online through www.albertarelm.com. Hunters should register on this website in advance and purchase a current year Wildlife Certificate, if they have not already done so. Hunters require a yellow online paper tag to purchase this licence online. The yellow online paper tags are available at all District Fish and Wildlife Offices. Licences will be sold starting Thursday, November 1, at 9 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 200 permits will be allotted - 50 for each hunt. The cost of the licence is $9 plus GST. Hunters must be Alberta residents eligible to hunt in the province. "

Blaze
I also got drawn for the first hunt. Does anyone know the requirement for blaze? Would a vest suffice or a full jacket?
Thanks

From last year's handout at the safety briefing:
" 4. All persons in the hunting party must wear blaze orange or solid red outerwear, for example an orange safety vest, to increase their visibility."
If you are interested I could scan an email the base requirements that we were given last year.

As you are driving in towards the base you will see posted signs pointing towards the base theatre. Very clearly marked.
Looking forward to getting out there

Is there a max number of helpers per shooter. Can 1 shooter have a couple guys along to help?
My buddy got his Nov draw and would like to go experience this.
