Default Where did he go?

I was out for birds today, seen a grouse run in very small group of low bush. My lab showed game right where it was, both of us never seen or heard it again. I know it could have flown, but you had to see this spot....I should have seen it on the wing...lol, it was like it vanished. Out smarted by a bird with a very small brain...great day in the bush all the same.

They have disapeared for me like this many times. I think they can run/walk really fast and very quietly. There also very very camouflaged . But with a dog you would think he would have flushed it out. That's odd
Thanks for the post,
HA

Grouse are getting smarter. I think its an evolution thing. Got outsmarted a few times this weekend. They don't stick around long and can hightail it out of range really fast on foot. Especially the older birds..

A ruffed grouse can duck under a small cover of grass or brush and completely disappear. Its amazing.

I've been in your situation and felt just as bewildered!

I remember retrieving a downed bird in the bushes one time. I ended up on hands and knees tying to find that Ruffie.

At the moment I found it, it was directly between my hands and less than twenty-four inches from my nose- and I still had difficulty seeing it! Kind of like a 3-D illusion thing going on. It had its wings partly spread and its head tucked in.

Most amazing camouflage, for sure. I was in awe.
