Super caliber for that range, light recoiling , and will drive a 140 grain bullet with enough energy to knock rams over at 500 meters.
Absolutely NOTHING wrong with it!

Great caliber...... personally I'm a big fan of the short action's , and if you follow your <200 yd rule, your good to go with anything in these parts.

I have that exact gun. I have never shot any game with it myself but I use it for my first time hunters that I mentor with the AHEIA program. It is a very effective cartridge on deer and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on larger game at reasonable ranges. I also like the detachable magazine for mentoring new hunters because they seem to be able to operate it easier and it is easier for me to see if the gun is unloaded or not when we are getting in and out of vehicles. I plan on shooting it a bit more at the range so I just got a Boyd thumbhole stock for it whick looks really nice. I hope you enjoy it

Shoot the 140 TSX and fear no creature in Alberta!

Best all around caliber IMO, great balistics, efficient, minimal recoil, accurate, which all add up to a real fun gun to shoot in the field and at the range.

Default 7mm08

Don't have your rifle but have been reloading for a Savage 99C lever action 7mm/08 for about 12 years now. The ctg. as you probably know is merely the .308 winchester necked down to 7 mm and nothing more. Whatever you would hunt with the .308 can be taken with the 7/08 at the same ranges.

I shoot 115 gr.Speer HPTs...139 gr Hornady..140 Sierra and 175 gr Hornady Spitzers out of mine and get about the same velocities as my .308 useing 110 gr..150 gr..180 gr. bullets.

My rifle with its best loads in each bullet weight will shoot one inch groups for the first 3 shots/100yds...and sometimes less than that ...your bolt gun should do the same or better.

The 7mm08 has a unique feature and for accurate loads, will group all bullets from 115 gr. to 150 gr in their individual one inch/ 3 shot groups in the same 2 inch or less square at 100 yards regardless what bullet and what powder was used. (A 115/120 gr. at 3050 fps and a 139/140 /150 at 2700 ) Other 7mm08 owners I know have found this to be true with their rifles also.

So if you were varminting with a 115 gr. and were then going to hunt larger game with say a 140 gr + , very little, if any at all sight changes are required for 100 yds.

200 yds is the furthest I've shot targets with and groups under 2 inches are quite common for this caliber at that distance.

If 7mm08 brass is not common in your area any new or once fired .308 case ..well lubed and run through your 7/08 die will make all the cases you need. They are a few thou short and will take more reloads before case trimming may be required.

Congrats on your new rifle ...it should serve you well

Slightly warmer than a 7X57 so it's good for big game out to even 400 yards! Depending on the bullet and shooter.Well balanced round no doubt!!....Harold

Great gun and caliber. Excellent choice. Mild recoiling guns are easier to shoot, therefore, they are typically shot more accurately. I'll take a smaller caliber with an accurate shooter any day before the bigger caliber with someone who flinches...

Great caliber. I personally think it is the best all around cartridge going. I had a Browning BLR (2 deer and 4 coyotes). Couldn't get used to the lever, grew up on a Remington pump, so sold it and had a 308 win Remington Pump 760 rebarrelled to 7mm-08. That won't seem reasonable to some but I love the cartridge. Trajectory is a little flatter than the 308 and not quite as flat the 270. Energies are very similar to both the 308 and 270 (not enough difference either way any animal would notice). You get all that with about 15 - 20% less recoil than a 308 WIN or 270 WIN with the bullets of the same sectional density.

I believe your gun has a 24" barrel so if you should get maximum velocities with it and any of the Model 700's I had or have where great shooters with great triggers.

Sounds like a great gun / caliber combination.

Enjoy your new gun.

The 7mm-08 is a great round for deer hunting. Remington makes very good rifles for the dollar spent. Keep it and enjoy.
