New Laker lure ! ....... No more tube jigs?

I've been looking for a lure , that had the colours of a burbot.
As this is what I find Lakers like to target.

Bought this lure form Cabelas .
Made by Savage and its a 3 D burbot !

i didnt see any way to jig it just casting or trolling .

They do have some weight to them ,but i still will add a 2 oz jig head .
Sure the laker will swallow head first. Will be adding a nice stinger hook up front.
I did go for the smaller one about 6-8"long.($16.00)

Any one know, if the ice is starting on the edges yet at Cold Lake.

I tried jigging one on our fly in fishing trip to Namur Lake this year. Didn't work as good as I hoped.

I think the trick for lakers will be... they will hit a bait fish from the side and grab it, swim a few few feet or yards and then stop and turn the bait fish so it can inhale head first. After the first hit wait for the fish to stop a few seconds and then set the hooks. I'd bet because of the size of the lures a few missed hits are going to happen.

That burbot hook looks like a great lure for the NSR in heavy currents for the great big pike.

Interesting! I dont know how it will work for jigging, seems more of a trolling lure but dont think it will reach the depth for lakers. More of a pike lure maybe?
I have never heard of lakers eating burbs, mainly whitefish and cisco's I thought. Would be very curious to see how this works out! Please post results!

I bought a few of the burbot (oil color I think). Bought this spring and casted them with a heavy rod at a number of lakes this year.

I did manage to catch a few pike, and even a few walleye, but overall was disappointed with them. For the amount of time I spent casting them, I didn't hook up much. I know I was on structure that was holding fish, as when I took of the burbot and cast a jig, crank etc, I was catching lots of fish.

I didn't spend much time trolling the burbot, but had the same impression.

The burbot will catch fish, but mostly just fishermen IMO.

Same as my experience. As mentioned above I tried jigging with it for lakers and also casting it for pike. Pike didn't seem too care for it that much and I don't think the action is right when jigging them(burbot don't swim vertical and you need to retrieve it steady to get the good tail action). Might be good for lakers if you slow trolled it on/near the bottom but overall I had better luck with other lures.

I used them on a fly in trip to Andrew lake this fall. They were too heavy to target the spawning lakers in the rocks. I caught a few pike on them but they were quickly shredded.

Great marketing though

What about the various Bondy Baits, since those are actually made to jig.

Though they are fugly compared to that pretty lure.

I have had no luck on the Bondy bait for Ice fishing lakers . Better in spring.
Just a little to big ,I find Lakers in the past few years have been taking smaller
lures . Even the large 6 inches tub jigs from Fishing hole have been to big.
The reason it might be, is because there is more bait fish these past few years and they are full .

Not my favourite lure either as they are hit or miss but I did end up using them a lot up at Namur because it produced better then the burbot(and a couple other larger lures that I had) and kept some of the little guys from biting.

I always consider lures to fall into 2 categories. Lures that imitate real forage and trick fish into biting and lures that provoke aggressive or inquisitive strikes. The first category is rare requiring great pattern, action and even scent and they are also difficult to fish(in order to have correct action) but if you get it right they can be deadly (easiest example being choosing the right dry fly). The latter category is much easier to fish and can still produce quite well and I would guess I probably do 90% of my fishing with lures that I would classify in the 2nd category.

As an example lets compare the burbot to the bondy. Burbot looks real but doesn't have realistic action and doesn't smell like a burbot. If jigged it hangs more vertically and the main action is a rippling tail. Bondy on the other hand looks like a chunk of plastic but hangs more vertical and has a big shiny vibrating blade on it. I don't think many fish are stupid enough to think either are a burbot so the more horizontal action and blade lead to more fish then the rippling tail(which likely isn't all that visible 50-100+ feet down.
