Default Scope for 7mm Rem Mag

i went to wholesale today just to look at the x-bolt and the t3. i ended up putting the t3 on hold for a week so i can make my decision.

but id need a scope for it. its gonna be my first hunting rifle for deer, elk, and moose.

i was thinking about a 3-9x40mm being a good size for it, but i know next to nothing about scopes.

price point is $500 and under.

i was thinking about a leupold vx-2

any other suggestions?

What are your plans for the rifle? 3-400 yard max? sight in a couple inches high at 100 and shoot for max point blank like most hunting rigs. Then any 3-9 with a duplex reticle is perfect. Don't get suckered into a fancy milling or varmint reticle, they are useless.

id say 500yd max is what ill have the rifle out to, but ill probably only be shooting 2-300 this year.

ill get into the expensive stuff later once i start making real money at work

That's likely what I'd put on. Lots of guys like the Zeiss conquests, and Vortex's. You may also want to look at fixed 4, or 6. Elite maybe. $500 will get you some decent glass for sure. You'll likely want to pop a limbsaver on as well.

Ninety percent of the Vortex owners brag about how good their customer service and warranty is, I would steer clear.

I should let you put a few mags through the 458 Socom when I have it loaded for 2000fps, 45/70 firepower in a six pound package

Just so you are aware that T3 is going to have some snap in a 7 Rem.

I don't care if you buy it or not. I just thought you should know ahead of time.

If you don't have a lot of shooting under your belt it may surprise you.

That is why I am going with the T3 instead of T3 Lite. With a limbsaver it should be manageable.

I've got a .270 WSM in a T3, definitely has a bit of kick to her.

light weight guns are over rated. Especially if you are just road hunting around Calgary kidding

I did have one in a 270 WSM, very accurate rifle killed a lot of deer, not one less than three hundred yards

The 7 can get out there, I'd look at a 4-12 or 4.5-14 and take advantage.

Back on topic.

For what you are describing that the gun will eventually be used for,( up to 500) I would look at a 4-12 or 4.5-14. Look at picking up something used here if cash is a concern right now.

If it is a Leupold that went thru Korth you needn't worry about warranty. The VX2 line will have the 4-12. You need to step up a bit to the VX3 line I believe to get the 4.5-14.

Whatever it is that you do get, spend what you can afford to. Glass is important. I have bought less expensive rifles in the past so I can put decent glass on them. Save a little on the rifle and put it towards the glass.

My motto is "If you can't see it, it doesn't matter how pretty the rifle is. You still can't shoot it."

I should add that I can let you have a look at a couple different levels mounted on rifles if you want side by side. I see you are in Calgary.

You could look at a VX3 4.5-14x50, VXR 3-9x40, Leupold QDMA 3-9x40, VX3 2.5-8x36. All look a little different. And looking at them on a rifle is different than holding them at the store in your hands.

You reminded me to change my location, I moved to grande prairie on the 6th.

But I'll go to wholesale again Tuesday and buy the gun and scope, just been looking at glass for now.

I went today strictly to look and handle the rifles, no intentions of buying. I also held the Thompson Center but it didn't feel as good as the Tikka.

My cousins suggested to match the value of the rifle with the scope, or close to it.

Nikon Monarchs appear to be a decent scope.

I would tend to say spend the money on the scope, you can switch it out to other guns you acquire down the road, and you only have to buy it once.
A 3-9x40 or 2.5-10x 40 or 44 will work great, if you go 12x or bigger, look at the size of it. Then think about carrying it all day, along with your other stuff. If you are a stand hunter, you can lug anything to the stand. If you want to wander the countryside on foot, keep the size down.
50mm is nice to see thru, but, it is big to carry. Anything 12x or over and you'll pickup mirage fairly easily.

I have a Zeiss Conquest HD5 2-10x42mm on my Sako 85 in 7mm Rem Mag and cannot ask for a better set! If budget is a concern, look at the Vortex Viper series. Very good scope and holds zero.

Go to the store and take a look at different brands of scopes in the magnification and price range you want, maybe 3-9 or 4-12 by 40 or 50 and compare them.

Look for things like brightness/light transmission, field of view, eye relief, weight (if it matters), ergonomics and features (i.e. turrets, tube length, warranty, hydrophobic lense coatings, etc) and see which one looks best to you.

Some choices to consider in that price range: Bushnell elite, Nikon Monarch, Leupold VX2, Zeiss Terra, Vortex Viper or Viper HS.

Yup. Have 2 of them both on my Weatherby's. Work great. Even the 2.5x10 4200 would work good for the OP.

One thing to do for sure is take the brands listed and go look through them everyone has different eyes I like leupolds but only vx3 and up Id take a bushnell elite over a vx2 any day of the week the glass just looks clearer to me. Go let your eye be the judge.

I'm the opposite. I like the vx 2 much more compared to my bushnell elite
