Default Chain Lakes Reservoir

Hi,

Has anyone ice fished Chain Lakes Reservoir this year? I am new to Alberta and want to make sure the ice is safe before I drive from Calgary?

Thanks for the help,

Ryan

Default The Velveeta answer

Just so you don't feel left out, Southern Alberta is having an odd ice time, so even some of us seasoned ice guys are pretty cautious right now, so where normally we'd be fishing on a good 14-18 inches and giving out tips, this year not many of us want to give advice that may end up being not so good.

check out the ice report to get a feel of the ice conditions from cowtown west east and south. best still is to drive to these lakes and see if there is recent fishing activity or people out there. Personally, I would trust Chain more than K Lakes right now and you don't have to venture far from shore.

* 14 feet deep, 20 inches off the bottom, mealworm and line indicator.

Do you know of a place within a 2hr drive or less from Calgary that has good ice right now? I prefer to fish trout and pike would be my second choice.

I'm also hoping to go to chain lakes next week sometime. Colder weather at night should have helped with the stability of the ice. My suggestion for pike would be any of the reservoirs south/east of the city.

fished Chain Lakes on December 7. Was 6 - 8 inches. Lots could have changed in 2 weeks though. Doesn't mean there is 6-8 inches now.

A report from Ifish Alberta that the Upper lake is 9" near the boat launch. I might drive down there tomorrow to drill a few holes to check.
