Default Question for the fly fishers.

Hey all! So I've used and tried out almost every type of fly out there except an egg pattern, I just never thought it would be of any use on our rivers so I know there used in salmon streams on the coast because of the big spawns and what not but would they work here on our trout streams? just wondering if anyone has experience with using them here and if so did you use them season specific or year round?

thanks!

Cool

I have done a great turn on RM whitefish on pink or yellow egg patterns. I tie beads 1/4"or so on. they work best late aug mid sept. bulls or brookies spawning????.not sure why it works then but they do.

Ive fished yellowish egg patterns in the spring to imitate sucker eggs in a few places with some success.

Default Works great on the Crow

March April during the spawn. River keys in
On it. Egg patterns used to be awsome below Lundbreck falls back before they shut that area down to protect the spawn.

Good thing they did too.

You would have to use a smaller variation of the salmon egg (because sucker eggs and trout eggs are smaller). But in theory it would work. Possibly dead-drift it with a nymph behind it.

In Alberta I've never had any luck with egg patterns.

I've only had luck with 'egg sucking leach' patterns. But not with plain egg patterns.

Ive caught the odd whitefish and trout on pink and orange fly patterns. I think the whitefish particularly eat trout eggs in the fall when the browns, brookies and bulls spawn. Nothing to consistent tho so i dont think it is that worth it.

Cheers,

drifting salmon eggs in rivers/streams used to be a staple for old school bait/spin fisherman back in the day. it would make sense for me to give it a go. never even crossed my mind before though.

Now that one I've had a lot of luck with. Even nailed a sturgeon on the Bow with that pattern not to mention lots of big browns. Tried drifting egg patterns one spring but with no luck. It might have been the time of year or place.

Tiny little ones in orange about 2mm work on the fall on the bow.... I've only really had success when finding a redd, (DO NOT FISH OVER IT) head downstream and fishing holding water. No sense in disturbing the browns, but the rainbows will station out in the runs/tailout's below.

Well I'll give it another try, I'll tie up some small egg patterns in differnt combos and give it a shot again.

I catch my fair share of fish on the Bow but it's always nice to experiment.

I've had fair sucess on the Bow with egg patterns. Dead drift deep and slow.

These same patterns , albeit in a much smaller version, under an indicator have worked very well for the NSR goldeye run. This has also been sucessful in the Coal Valley, Cadomin area for Whites.
