Default Cross fox?

Got an unusual fox a few weeks ago. My partner told me its a cross fox but it is a solid charcoal color. Is this typical. It is a really nice looking animal and I have never seen anything like it. I will post a pic in a few if I can.

Your fox sounds more like a silver fox. The quote is from wikipedia....

Quote:
The cross fox is a partially melanistic colour variant of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) which has a long dark stripe running down its back, intersecting another stripe to form a cross over the shoulders. It tends to be more abundant in northern regions,[1] and is rarer than the common red form, but is more common than the even darker silver fox.[2]

Beautiful fox .. I would keep it and get it tanned . As for price ? well the farmed foxes have about ruined the wild fox trade , they can raise any color they want now . I know , back in the early 80's however we got $200 from the Hubson Bay buyer that came around , would have probably doubled that at an auction .. Currently the price won't do him justice to the memory and trophy of keeping it .

You likely wouldn't do too well at auction....they need colors that match and they likely don't have many or even any that are that color.

Would I do the usual case skinning and fleshing for tanning? Where is a good place to get it done?

IMO, definitely not a cross fox...they actually have an x on their backs.

As far as selling it, you could maybe get a good price from a taxidermist...so you would need to skin it according to their plans.

Correct.

A Cross Fox does not always have the cross. Any fox with any amount of dark brown fur and without the silver tipped fur is classed as a Cross Fox.

If it has the dark fur and has the silver tipped fur, (actually it's white tipped) but has red or yellow fur, would be called a Superior Cross.

we have quite a few around here, (Yellowknife) I see them quite often. This past summer I saw the same group of three a number of times, I assume they are siblings as they were constantly playing. They were quite approachable and would come right up to people. I think someone at the mine must have been feeding them. The curiosity is that two are cross foxes and one is red, I've seen mixed litters every year I've lived here- 9 years now

You can see that the one in the middle picture has more red fur than the other one

Yep, cross fox.......couple years ago they were paying $18.00 tops for them..

In the 70's I trapped a nice cross fox...I was around 12 years old....when my dad got his fur check from the O.T.A. he wanted to trade my fox for his $240.00 lynx....joking........He showed me his check....!!
I got around $350.00..!!!! for that cross fox...

good old days....

If I had a place to put a mount like this I would definitely hire you. It looks amazing. I think I will just get it tanned and keep it as a trophy from my first year trapping. Q... Do I still case skin it for tanning?
