Thanks. That action shot has special meaning to me. A few years back my dad bought a flyrod set up and wanted me to take him out in AB to learn to flyfish. A few months later he passed from cancer and never got to use it. The rod was passed down to me and that was the first fish caught on it. I had the flyrod in my left hand and was crouching down with the point and shoot in the other. The old man was good with photography and I can't help but think he was looking down on me that day and played an assist on that shot.

sorry donkey i can't contribute much gear and technique wise. i haven't targeted northerns in many years. back in the day when the walleye bite was slow we would pull the boat up into the reeds and have a "Jack Off". All guys in the boat would throw on the biggest ugliest spoon or plug and have at er. last guy to bring one to the boat bought supper and the pops. i remember doing this on a hot summer day at baptist more than once. hooking into them through the ice while fishing for eyes on rod and reel and 6lb test can be some fun and a challenge. take your time and play the big girls out as much as you can, keep your line away from the side of the hole as much as possible. most importantly be sure her head is lined up just right before you make that last move to get her head into the hole. you get in too much of a hurry here and your light line won't stand a chance. also keep your buddys away from the hole and don't let anyone try to help by grabbing your line. here's a couple mishap ice northerns that were worthy of a pic. wabuman, utikuma, baptist, and a southern reservoir.

I caught this guy on 6lb test while tossing a spinnerbait for smallies.

And this is my best through the ice...

You are right there Oliver people forget or perhaps don't realize that pigeon is not only an awesome walleye fishery but it has a great pike population.

Yes, national park. However the license you'll get only will allow you fishing at Banff, Jasper or Yoho national parks, because of that make sure to check out regulations or special licenses you may need when fishing at any national park.

Wabamum hot water canal was one of my favorite pike spots. Open water fishing in the middle of winter was a blast. Here are some vids we shot of only a couple of times out out of many.

Biggest from the canal was this TANK at 44inch in the middle of Jan at -30C. lol.

Dont be afraid to go smaller with your bait or lures too. if you look close you can see the quarter ounce jig I had on with a 2 inch minnow when I caught my best pike last winter. Just make sure you dont overstress your gear if you hook a big pike. use the drag, if you have one.
