Nice tie. Try smaller thread to get smaller heads, it takes a little to get used to thinner thread but once you do it makes much neater heads.

^^^ what he said. I also found that when I started tying, i over-wrapped things quite a bit. now I use about half the number of wraps that I used to and my flies still don't come apart

2x, but also it looks like you should bring your material closer to the head since you have a big gap. That will also tighten up the pattern a bit. Regardless, nice nymphs!

Just getting started in tying, but this one (a variation on the Muddler) is my absolute favourite of the ones I've tied so far (though I'm also getting not bad at some caddis dries) -- please let me know what you think:

I recognize that the tail is on the thin side.

Geeze man, you jump right into a tougher tie. Looks good, spinning deer hair can take a while to master but it looks like you've got a good jump on it, the red looks really good!! If you google trimming deer hair with a razor blade there are some good videos that make it look easy LOL.

Good and easy Caddis fly here.

Thanks to both of you guys! Olive is a favourite of mine in the streams I fish; and I've always thought muddlers might do well with gills. Spinning wasn't difficult for me, but trimming is proving to be a bit more of a challenge.

Looks good and I think the fish will agree

It would not hurt to tie a few with about 1/2 the deer hair because at times a sparser fly is the better choice. I carry both bulky and sparse muddlers in my box for this reason

Try a white/silver with a little flash version with the red gills. This comes in handy especially in low visibility
