Just start with a 2/0 salmon hook (and an extended shank if you like) and keep jamming stuff on it until it's the approximate size of a TV remote. Bull trout streamers are really fun to tie, I started making my own zonker strips from rabbits I shoot. Winter snowshoe hare hair is about 3x as long as store bought zonkers, it's like casting a mop.

I have tried many over the years and now keep 1 blue/white lefty's deceiver with me at it works the best so far short of a small cutthroat at the end of the line.

For the most part, any fish that likes to eat other fish, can be caught on a Lefty's Deceiver or a Clouser pattern, then there is the 1/2 & 1/2 combo of the two. You can tie them from minnow size to as long as you can find the material for. Blue, red or chartreuse bucktail or calftail or polar bear over white, are probably the three most common combos people will tie up.
The other one that will usually get hits, is called a "flash fly", made entirely of synthetic flash materials, usually pearl and silver with some red in it. You can vary the colour blends in it, to whatever turns your crank.

This is a legitimate 10" fly that consists of two 2/0 hooks, a 85mm shank and a 25mm shank that I typically use for bulls. If people say they are using 10" flies they probably are not but they really should be.

If it ain't chartreuse, it ain't no use is very applicable to bull trout as well.

the smaller fish will eat them as well so don't be put off by sheer size thinking you will only catch monsters. Are these flies really "fly fishing"? Honestly, I don't really care. I have fun catching them and just as much fun spinning them up!
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or would wanna trade a few bugs possibly!

If you can pick up your bull with one hand....your fly must not be big enough yet

I said the smaller fish will eat the big flies as well. I meant that to imply that fly size does not relate to the fish size but I guess I didn't get that across. Sorry for trying to help a guy out with my experiences.

Chill? I was not angry or anything along those lines, sorry if I came across that way.
Honestly, there is no skill in casting these flies. You strip line out, slap it behind you and haul it out. Wouldn't even call it fly casting most of the time honestly haha

Alot of my bulltrout patterns have very little or zero Chartreuse in them

I have caught big bulls (10lbs plus) on nymphs and drys in the size 10-8 area

My streamers which have caught bulls/dollys in the 15lb and up area are nothing close to the length of some of the stuff im seeing. It is not always *big fly big fish*

Look at chironomids, iv caught massive rainbows on size 16-18 chironomids

Different hearing what others have success with. Iv tried the huge flys and they seem to only do best with pike and walleye for me.

My flys rarely have chartreuse in them and iv caught bull for over a decade lol

some guys swear by the color and its all they use

Honestly it out fished the chartreuse fly. But the white one I tied with fins worked the best by far. I'm gonna tie more grayling flies though.

I am going to tie up some bigger circus peanuts and give those a try.
I am thinking of making it look like a Cutty and in the 6-10 inch range.

Big, white, and hairy. After years of chasing monsters in Grande Cache, big white and hairy is the best way to go.

funny you mention GC, when I first tied the flys I shared above, it was in GC when we lived there and that is where I caught some huge bulls with them

The definition of pig differs from person to person..... So's the qty of ton.

That one, pretty much pegs something with all the right attributes of a streamer.
