Default Welcome to the new addition of to my family

I’d like to thanks everyone for their inputs into the snowblower thread. Also special shout out to Tri777 for spotting this on kijiji for me.

Tri777 also gave me some good pointers on what to look for. Thanks again bud!

Got this baby for $500. Electric start. 28 inch wide. Doesn’t seem overly well used for being a 10 year old machine. It’s an Ariens so they make lots of snowblowers.

Now I just need some snow. Looking forward to making some noise.

Now I need to buy some 5W 30 oil and give it an oil change.

Does anyone do the greasing the manual talks about?

Yup. Got some tender loving car today.

Drained out the old oil. Very dark. Didn’t look like it had been changed in a while.

Then put some fresh synthetic 5W30 oil in. Ran it for 30 min. Then did another oil change. Much cleaner the second time.

Tank is full. Oil changed. All buttons and gears working. Starts with a couple pulls.

Let it snow… let it snow… let it snow…

It’s. Snowing now but not expecting much.

What do you do for regular maintenance on your unit?

I’m going to be the devil’s advocate here a warn you. As a mechanic for years I have always told people, don’t love your vehicles or equipment. They are a cold hearted bitch. You will grow to hate them, and she will take your money. They don’t care about you or what you feel is right or wrong, they don’t care whether you accomplish your goals or not. They will one day leave you stranded in 30 below or 30 above and you can curse and kick them all you want, it affect them none. They are a necessary evil.

But nice machine hope it serves you well.

And just having fun with you( but don’t love it!)

I’ve yet to fall in love with a machine. Lol

It will make loud noises till it won’t.

As a mechanic… any tips on what I should do? I plan on getting some grease but there is some ideas on lubing / oiling stuff up.

One suggestion was lubing the drive shaft but I would need to tip it up on end and take the base plate off.

Not sure if I need to do stuff like that.

I suspect this unit hasn’t been used much at all in 10 years… but I also suspect they haven’t greased and oiled anything in 10 years.

I’m suspecting maybe one oil change in the last 10 years.

Anything I should put in the gas to clean the carburetor?

Or just let er rip and do oil changes?

Why apologize?

I got the snow blower cause the wife had someone picked out to shovel the snow for us.

So I totally get it.

Hey… we’re did the other posts go?

You’ll use it a few times. Then you will find someone with a toro single stage and try it. You will then list your nice Ariens for sale and buy a toro.

Neighbour has a smaller toro gas unit and an electric unit. So far we pool resources. I use my leaf blower to clean off the skiffs. He uses his blowers for heavier snow falls. Now we have a big one for deep snows.

Watch Ex Machina, if you haven't already, and then think again about loving a machine!

Bottom line. You purchased what appears to be a decent machine.

Look after it and it will look after you...

That’s what I figure. A new one with more power and a headlight is $1900 at Lowe’s.

Fingers crossed it lasts a long time to come.

I don't know about snow blowers, but I was told to use single weight oil (and not multi-weight) in a lawn mower.
You mentioned yours was synthetic oil.
I am sure not a mechanic and don't mind to be corrected.
My new boss just moved here from London, UK and was complaining that there was not enough snow; I told her it was over-rated!

You did the oil change right if it hasn’t run for awhile. Throw a little Sea Foam in the fuel for a few tanks, that stuff is great. If there’s grease nipple of course hit them, there should be a few on the rotating blade shaft. Check the shear pins on them also, and keep a few extras, then can break. As for the drive shaft maybe, but if it doesn’t have a nipple not much you can do, but if you do go there check the seal. The only other thing I can think of right now is the cables that operate the controls, if it’s been sitting they can be dry. If I was standing over it I’m sure other things would come to mind. Maybe other guys can chime in a bit to help also.

Specs say use synthetic 5W30.

Ya. Less snow means easier and faster ice fishing.

More snow means I get to use my used purchase.

I lean towards wanting the fishing more.

I’m coming. At top speed I’ll be there in 4 hours. Please send gas.

West Calgary just got a deep heavy wet snowfall I was just told on FB.

Here… an inch that blew off with my leaf blower.

Right on!

I was doing the same thing today, about 8" of heavy snow then rain which made it oh so much fun to move. Did a bunch with the snowblower on the JD then switched to the Payloader to finish it up. Decent payday. More snow, please!

Mine only has 1 grease nipple down on the first stage auger gearbox and it say's to grease every 25 hrs or once per season, I change oil at the end of the winter before I put it away 5W30 synthetic is recommended, I use shell premium gas.

It has 4 shear pins but I have never broke 1 ( touch wood ) the reality is even in a bad winter I would bet mine only runs about 25 hrs max, I've used it twice this winter so far maybe 3 hrs total, still haven't burned 1 tank of fuel, A little TLC each year and my old blower ran for 25+ years and I expect this one will also.

I used to have the exact unit! She worked very well! I sold my house and included the same snowblower about 3 years ago. It’s a pretty good unit!

Put only high octane nonethanol fuel in and stabilizer in spring before storing it. Wax the auger discharge shoot to stop snow build up inside. Keep an eye on the pins holding the front augers in place as they have a tendency to fall out or break. Kudos on the good buy
