There is a movie: or at least the movie pilot to the TV series. Linda Blair, William Shatner?, David Janssan. It was filmed on the Palmer Ranch in Twin Butte Alberta. I help construct the "sod shack" and the garden and remove some fence lines. Silliest thing I heard in the whole movie was "trees" as "Laura" ran down the hill in front of the wagon ... Never understood that line until I moved to the prairies. The I got it

I am a bit of a movie and movie star history studier/buff and I have been using imdb.com as my source for information for many years and did not know that they listed "The Top 50 Best Of Genres", a good thing to know!
I went through the list this morning and I have seen at least 45 out of the 50 mentioned lol.
One of them brought back great memories. My father enjoyed westerns and we use to go and see them when they came out in the summertime at the local Drive-In when Drive-Ins existed.
I remember one very well, 5 Card Stud starring Dean Martin and Robert Mitchem, pretty good western!

The Big Sky is a great western. Kirk Douglas's performance was great in that picture, most of the actors did a great job in that movie as well.
Bruce Dern is excellent in Westerns and one of his best roles, I think, in a western was in The Cowboys. He was the first villain that killed John Wayne in a movie, and because of that he became despised by millions of moviegoers and it almost ruined his Career LOL
Actors must know that they did a great job in a movie when they touched the nerve of millions of moviegoers!

Just finished watching one from 2017 called Hostiles. Story was ok but really loved the acting of Christian Bale. Not sure how I missed this one or perhaps I dont remember it. But well worth watching for sure.

Like you, I missed that one as well and saw an ad about it last month and watched it several weeks ago, a good movie and I am hoping Westerns are making a comeback.
Here is one that is really good that nobody has mentioned, staring the very famous actor James Cagney and made in 1956.
Tribute To A Bad Man: "With no law within 200 miles horse rancher Jeremy Rodak runs his spread with an iron hand and deals with rustlers even more ruthlessly"

"The Grey Fox" about Bill Miner was mentioned, I just watched it on TV, filmed in BC.
I've watched 2 Gunsmoke movies with James Arness that are pretty good. There might be more. I read that John Wayne was originally asked to play Marshal Dillon and turned it down recommending his friend James Arness

So many good old western's I find it hard to pick a favourite I don't think Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid has been mentioned.
There a fewer westerns being made these days is because the generation that grew up with Gunsmoke is getting older the younger ones are into zombies and space travel. Another reason almost every event in western history has been done and redone several times, Western's don't well in foreign markets and the risk of offending someone plays a big part.
Another I liked was Skin game starring James Garner and Lou Gossett

Another very good western I enjoyed watching several times and was made in 1970:
The Ballad of Cable Hogue, starring Jason Robards and Stella Stevens.

That was “pioneer woman” it was pilot for a future series. Never took off. I was a teenage extra in that movie. I believe the girl was Joanna Petit ., Linda Blair was in wild horse Hank , also filmed in the same area.

You are probably correct I was not sure if it was Linda or not was a few years ago. LOL. And yes a dud but Little house on the prairies did very well.

My favourite was probably Tombstone with Russel/Kilmer.
Top list for me:
Blazing Saddles
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
Lonesome Dove
The Man From Snowy River
Legends Of The Fall
Unforgiven
Open Range
Quigley Down Under
Young Guns
So many good ones over the years, good thread OP....

Best ever; not exactly horses and gunfights but Albertans have got to watch "There Will be Blood" with Daniel Day Lewis. Black gold.

"Valdez is Coming" - you can only push a man so far and they pushed him way too far . Burt Lancaster who portrays Valdez only wanted $100 but the bad guy didn't pay and that's what the movie is about . Very good film , it's on youtube
