Default My Last Couple Days on the Ice - Pics

Had a lot of fun this year out on the ice. Fished some seriously cold weather and some really warm weather. Caught some nice fish, no monster pike for me but there is always next year I guess. Anyways here are a few more pics from last couple days of fishing the other week. I'll have to put these vids together if I ever get some time to.

Night fishing the Jaw Jacker

Nice Tip Up Pike, lost about a 7-8 pounder on the 80 pound flourocarbon. Couldn't believe it broke! It broke in the hole right at the crimp... I guess I'm going to have to retie all my leaders Too bad the crimps break the line it is so handy.

Enjoy the last bit of the ice! Springs Coming

Were you using 80lb Fluorocarbon leader material, or 80lb Fluorocarbon line?

Thanks to a tip that I read here on AO, I switched to Fluorocarbon leader material in 60lb this year and didn't snap a single one.

Default double barrel

you could try this type of crimp. might work better.

I had a big pike pull the leader right out of the sleeve before, now I just run the line through the hook eye and tie an overhand knot, havent had one come undone or break since

I usually don't get cut from holding them like this. I get cut when I stick my bare hand down their throat to retreive a hook and they chomp me good sometimes. At that point I'm always wondering why I didn't just go get the pliers. Wounds heal, not a big deal.

Yeah it is 80lb fluoro leader and broke right at the double barrel crimp, so guess I'll stop using them and just retie them all.

The problem with fluoro leader material is that it is so brittle that if you over crimp it fractures on the inside of the crimp. The only way around this is to tie it (I found the canoe man knot is the best with heavy fluoro) or get a commercial crimping tool where you can set the crimp pressure.

Hence I tie my when I use them. (For the most part I use titanium leaders and have never had one fail, even after more than 2 years now)

I use titanium leaders for pike in the summer time and just started using fluoro leaders this winter while fishing down in Florida. I would never bother using fluoro for pike, titanium is much stronger and more user friendly imo.

Thats the style of crimp I use for my leaders. The ones I get are for Scotty downrigger cable, and I loop it through twice before crimping. Its also a good idea to use a lighter to melt the tag end a bit before you crimp, just helps ensure it can be pulled through the crimp...

Just use circle hooks, I started using them this year down in Florida and they work great. You don't set the hook, you wait for the fish to put pressure on it and it pulls it to the corner of the fishes mouth before digging in. You miss very few hookups and also get better hook sets most of the time.
