Default Range day with my 300 mag

With hunting season fast approaching, I thought I should make my once a year trip to the range to shoot my 300 mag. I try to be ethical, so it is important to me that I verify accuracy.

I like to shoot a 300 mag because I am a busy person and don't have much time to work on my shooting skills.

This thing kicks like a mule. Generally, I close my eyes, clench my teeth and then yank the trigger. That way the recoil doesn't seem so bad.

The original target only had the center aiming point. But sometimes the stars align and things turn out pretty nice. I drew the other aiming points on the target when I got home.

Once I've got her sighted in I like to take a shot at a lifelike target, just to make sure things are working just right.

Looks like I'm ready to go hunting with my 300 mag.

A good laugh, especially after the gut shot.

Oh heavens yes

Your good to go.

Even the worst shot placement brings them down.

There actually are holes under the toonies. A toonie is about 1.1 inch.
I don't think there's anything great about the groups; just good hunting accuracy that is pretty typical for this gun.

Bullets were 200gr Partitions. They're a little expensive for practising, IMO.
The 300mag was of the Winchester variety.

Can you imagine how much better your groups would be if you used one of those new metric calibers?

Somethings wrong with your gun, after every 3rd shot the point of impact shifts to a different target on another area of the paper. Hard to consistently gut shoot them with a gun like that, you might hit it in the nut sack, no animal wants to get shot in the nuts.

That’s why I shoot a 300win. Gives a guy a larger margin of error.

The worst of Shot placement is not the vitals, but the edges around them.

Some times the world dosen't allow pin point accuracy, that's why engineers made Sledge Hammers to pound small nails. Ha

Highly unlikely that Big Sky is going to be off the mark with his land cannon.

Pictures are worth a thousands words are they not. Ha

Or a sharp pencil can punch holes and you don't have to leave home to do it.....

Default Well Done

You sir are a better man than I. I couldnt shoot that many rounds with a 300 Win mag without developing a flinch that would make people think I had terrets syndrome. Nicely done!

I think if he opened his eyes he could tighten these groups up to something more acceptable then even a poodle shooting 6.5

When I shoot my thumper I have a smoke hanging out of my mouth. I get smoke in my eyes and makes them water. I'll have to try snuff next to see if it shrinks my groups.

We heard on another thread that slow bullets penetrate better.

Guess if you see a deer close, you'll have to back off to 1300 yards to successfully harvest it.

Or just close your eyes and hope for the best. Ha.

You can feel proud of owning a Magnum, Jack O'Connor had 3 of them in his gun cabinet.

He like the performance of the 416 Rigby. His seal of approval was all over that cannon.

Same here, i hate the 300's i've shot. Though they have been accurate. Standard weight rifles without brakes i'm done around .270 win in terms of shooting without worrying about flinch developing as range day goes on. My 6 lb naked .270 wsm was fine unbraked hunting of course but sure liked it braked for range duty.

Nice shooting Big Sky!

And the gut shot was excellent lol

You'ld most likely be in the above top 80% shooting with your eyes closed.

Good hearing can help you track the game better anyways. Ha

I had 2 rifles that worked awesome in the magnum category, but a old school 375 I had after that was brutal.

I think it was the design of the stock, a after market recoil pad didn't help that rifle. Ha.

Glad I scaled it down a bit, my shoulder is feeling much better.

Love the 300 Win Mag. Got a full on custom that shoots the 215 Berger at 3000 fps. With the Holland brake it is very comfortable to shoot. Gun finished at 10 lb 2oz complete with NF. I know some guys don't like brakes, but I even run them on my 6.5X47's. A set of SoundGear electronic ear plugs for all day comfort and hearing protection while hunting or target shooting.
