Default War Rifle

Thought it was time to leave my son his grand fathers 303. Wanted a wall mount so he could appreciate it more, plugged the barrel and threw something together. Turned out not bad for someone with no carpentry skills. Looks a little rugged with the bolts holding on the frame instead of glue or screws. Here's to all the vet's.

Thanks guys, sure he will like to have it.
Found a steel rod same diameter, cut it and hammered into barrel, spot welded the tip. For the other end I found a bolt (tight fit) cut off the head and hammered it into the breech.

I'm curious why you made it inoperable? It does look great, no denying that, but I for one would appreciate an operating gun that could be fired to a greater degree than a wall hanger. Just curious.

Nice job! I dig it and I'm sure your son will, too. The long guns with sentiment are my favourite.

The first rifle I ever shot was a parker hale 303 ... it used to hang on the wall at my hunt camp back in Ontario while I was growing up. When I moved up to the Yukon I took it along as my grandfather told me that I'd need a good bush gun up here. It now hangs on the wall at my new Yukon camp - with its loaded clip safe and secure but never too far away. Somehow now that my granddad's gone the pieces that I got from him are all the more important.

Why would you ruin a perfectly good rifle ?

Your intentions were good, but...

Wouldn't removing the firing pin also work ... then the bolt could say.

No?

I was wondering that as well. One of my sons shot his first big game animal (cow elk) with his grandfather's sporterized .303. Both my sons really value that gun, even though they have much more modern rifles as well.

Now of course if it was already in very bad or inoperable shape and you didn't want to bother restoring it, I can understand that.

Thanks for the replies. Yes nice gun, took a couple of deer with it back in the day. My son didn't take the route of hunting, shooting until recently. Moving across country and wanted to leave him something he would appreciate, more so for the heritage. Just something he could look at on the wall and remind him of how his ancestors fought for what we have today. If he ever needs a gun to hunt with he will have one.
Sentimental I guess.
Cheers to the vets.
