Default New Poll: Cuttie Clarification (PICS)

Hey there,

So I was at a new spot this morning putting my old fly gear to work. Caught this 18" Rainbow/Cutbow/Cuttie on a generic dry "trout fly" which was water logged and getting whipped about on 16 year old super coiling sinking line. It's all I have but it works, kinda. Gong show.

Anyhow, in order to satisfy my interest on the matter, here is another poll.

Let me know what you think it is.

My apologies for not having the hind end of the fish in frame. It's the best I could do, and it was a quick release.

You can see a bit of the slashes poking out. Again, the markings were more complete than captured in the pic.

Sorry, no pics of the basi-branchial teeth.

I could use a net and a scale! yargh

I'm pretty curious as to how all these trout that get posted would weigh out.

I'd guess 2.5lbs but who knows.

wasn't one poll regarding your catch identification good enough? you come off as knowing more about fish than most on the board, why ask for our help? i don't get it.

Well, I'm new to the area, fisheries, and fish.

As I've pointed out in previous threads, local knowledge is a valuable resource and that is what I'm attempting to draw upon.

I haven't fished these rivers for 30 years, so I don't know their histories and I'm not familiar with Westslope Cuts or their hybrids.

This is a learning experience for me and that is clear. In the last thread there is some great info provided which I am sure is of interest to some and will be archived to be of use to others in the future.

It would be great if some of the more knowledgeable members would pipe in.

The section of the Bow River from Ghost Dam to Bearspaw Dam was studied in 1998 by an environmental services firm which suggested there was no cutties in this section. However, it is clear from these images that the genetics are in there and may be more prevalent than this study suggested.

This of course could inform the public, SRD, academia, or whoever may be interested.

Some folks here are certainly concerned about walleye stocks in prairie reservoirs, why not be concerned about native trout in their original habitats?

Looks like a Cutt to me, im guessing not caught in the bow. Maybe from a lake?
Anyway nice fish, but i agree with some of the others, no use beating this dead horse anymore.

Cheers,

Just thought I'd add this to keep the great info inline with the topic for those interested in what BeeGuy is asking.

Oh yeah, the posted pic is a fish from the Bow above Cochrane, same stretch as the other cuttie poll fish was taken from.

Beeguy, there are not a lot of genetically pure cutts in AB. Most have some degree of hybridization with rainbows (which would be O. mykiss x O. clarki).

I would guess that the fish in question is "mostly" cutthroat.

Thanks for the great response, cheers.

I'm going to dissect one if I can catch one under 35cm with those colours.
