Lake Whitefish

I am looking to knock off a few new species this year and near the top of the list is the humble Lake Whitefish.

I have seen them at Sylvan but had zero luck.

Calgary is home base so within a couple hours of here would be best.

Looking forward to hearing where you have had good luck with them.

I am want to use a floating line on a fly rod with a wireworm (or 3) under a strike indicator. If you have any other suggestions please feel free to chime in.

I've had good luck in Sylvan lake for whites and sun breaker cove. I fish out of a boat and you can site fish them in the 5-9 fow. I usually use small spinners and keep changing colors until I find what they like. With flies I would use either micro leaches chironomids or what ever looks to be hatching. Hope that helps

Some people have been known to "sweeten" the wire worm with a maggot...just sayin'. Used to work at Wabamun in the fall, before the demise.

I catch whitefish on Sylvan on the fly rod all the time. I normally use a San Juan Worm 1' to 2' off the bottom under an indicator.

Sandy bottom with small short weed patches in shallow water...you can see the whitefish cruising the flats.

I have also caught them on hares ear, prince nymphs and chironomids.

Has anyone had luck anywhere other than Sylvan? I heard that Traverse also has a good amount of them.

The irrigation Res. are lousy with them. Chironomid uner an indicator. Will be a few weeks before they go deep.

Assuming you mean any Res connected by the irrigation canal systems?

Pick one, anyone.

If you don't know where the irrigation res. are, look on google earth, the satellite one. You will notice green areas, zoom in and you will notice green circles. Those are irrigated fields. Somewhere fairly close by there will be a body of water, those are irrigation res.

Yes the irrigation system res. The fish flies that everyone is complaining about right now? The whites are chowing down. They can be a bit intimidating to locate, but generally under 10ft of water. If you haven't had a bite in ten minutes move on. Right now, fairly tight to the dams can be good if you are shore bound. If you have a boat emerging weeds beds are good. Think trout, they have the same diet.
