Two antlerless mule deer tags
OK, I received two antlerless mule deer tags yesterday for WMU 160, same number, different "suffix" (-1 and -2). Was I supposed to have known I was going to get two? I think it means I can shoot two does? I didn't find any new double tagging requirements in the regs (nor the promise that I would get two tags).
This is your chance to point out that I should read the regulations or draw booklet better!

I looked. The license cost page (subnote 7) states 2 tags for the antlerless mule deer, however WMU 160 is not listed as a valid WMU ... weird.
Nothing under additional hunting opportunities for the 100 series either.
I guess you'll have to call.

I think double doe tags have been pretty common the last few years in 160. The number of buck tags released is also very high. Big change from 10 years ago.

maybe in the CWD section? I don't know, just guessing.
I know I won't be buying them as I have 8 tags already to fill

What I have is not a supplemental license, but the regular Antlerles Mule Deer Special License, cost $ 21.20. "Number of tags: 2" it says on the license. I'll have to swing by the good folks at the Cochrane F&W office one of these days, and ask.
I guess I can be really picky about on which buck to use the antlered tag, knowing that I should be able to get two does for the freezer! :-)

What's even more strange is this....in 238 they decided to give 2 tags to 66% or the applicants with a mulie doe draw instead of drawing 100% of the applicants and giving them one tag each.
Oh well...less competition and more mulie does for me
Doesn't make any sense. I got a letter saying they want to reduce the population in this WMU.

I was going to ask that as well...why wouldn't you draw everyone and then redraw everyone for a second tag? If you have 100 tags and 80 applicants, why not give everyone 1 and then give 20 people a second rather than turn away 30 hunters? Seems silly. Any rhyme or reason to it?

There are some odd things in this years regs.
If I read them right, there are many general (over-the-counter) MD buck tags, where all were draw years previous.

To be politically correct, I'd imagine. Seems they're handing out 133% of normal to try and lower the population. I guess they'd rather seem to be treating everyone equally instead of giving everyone one and then having someone dispute that the seconds were done equally.

My guess is they are limiting the number of hunters in a certain area. Maybe there has been conflicts or dangerous situations occurring in the past. Maybe landowners want less people driving around.

this happens in a number of zones, including the one i hunt. the theory behind it is to lower doe numbers slightly, knowing that most hunters will have more than just their doe draw to fill, so the ones that feel obliged will fill it, thus lowering the numbers, but not decimating the herd and keeping the hunter concentration levels down.

They must re evaluate numbers at some point after they draw for the tags. You could not know that you would get two tags, because it doesnt say it in the draw book, 160 was not listed as a multi tag WMU. In the draw book it says:
*Note: These WMUs will have multiple tags issued. Other WMUs may be identified at a later date.
Dave C where did you get your numbers for:

do they already have the stats listed somewhere for 2009 ? Curious

Ahh one more thing. if you've gotten drawn for a multitag they are trying to decrease the pop there. I would encourage you trying to fill the tags. If you cannot used the meat there have been multiple donation sites (around edmonton anyways)for the food bank in the past. I'm not sure about this year yet though I sure hope so. (They require a non gut shot animal , field dressed, and the heart lungs liver for testing within 24 hrs.)

Just think its a good cause , we hunt near wainwright and in the camp so easy to donate.

In 166 they gave me two tags also, in my hunting group about five other guys never got drawn. It is kinda funny why not let whoever applies get a tag and when everyone has a tag and they still seem to think they need to hand out more then 'randomly' hand out a second tag.

These areas 160-166 have been issuing 2 tags for a few years now. A confirmation letter was sent in the mail accompanying your draw success indicating that when your purchase your tag another tag would also be issued. They limit the amount of hunters to these zones by issuing two tags instead of doubling the amount of hunters into that area. It would benefit the gov't $$$ to double the hunters as that would double the amount of cash for antlerless deer but the impact would be to great on the area and harder to get permission from the farmers.

Ya, there are loads of zones with multiple antlerless mule deer tags. We got three each in the zone we drew. Kind of like being in Las Vegas watching the machine spit tags out!
