Default MY Weekend Moose Hunting

went hunting this past weekend.I saw a nice young bull moose about 300 - 400 yards away. Stopped my quad and grabbed my 30-06 rifle from the gun boot. walked about 150 - 200 yards towards the moose. sighted him up pulled the trigger and BANG the rifle almost blew outta my hands. looked up at the moose to see him still standing there. looked down at my rifle. Remember when bugs bunny stuck the carrot in Elmer Fudds rife..... Yes thats right I split my rifle barrel in two. Right down the middle blew the handle off the pump action ripped the strap ring right off...... I couldnt hear for well over an hour. I figure there was dirt in the gun boot and the bouncing on the quad rammed the dirt into the barrel. The sad part is I ALWAYS ALWAYS put electrical tape on the end of my barrel.. Well apparently not this time. To make matters worse the moose stood there for about 15 min watching me curse and swear and cry and pretty sure he could smell my drawers. Anyways just thought i would share my story.

Your not the only one ,this has happened to me 20 years back . Split the barrel and cracked the stock .....But I did get the bear !
Few years have past ,the 338 has a new barrel and a new stock and always gets a piece of electral tape pulled across the barrell before it goes out hunting !

Default Tape

Glad you are ok.....I use camo duct tape (stays on way better than electrical tape) as it doesnt come off until I shoot a hole through it or at the end of the season.

Good electrical tape like Scotch 88 stays on very well, but the cheap crap, doesn't hold very well at all, especially in cold weather.

Default question

Glad your okay. I have never herd of people putting tape at the end of your barrel. Does this affect accuracy or does it affect your rifle.

Nope, doesn't cause any problems.

count your lucky stars !!!! went to a funneral a few years back when the husband of a lady my wife worked with had hiis gun blow up on him... fragments came staight back into his face..... everyone in our hunting camp now uses tape on our barrel ends to ensure no dirt gets into plug the barrel
