Goose hunt #1 & 2 of 2009
Well after having a lot of competition of with outfitters in the area. I have managed to get in two limit out hunts.
So far the 2009 goose season has been a great one. Now we just need some cold weather up north to bring some more birds south.

good job, ya a little perservenance, and you can get some good hunts. we had an awesome shoot saturday on specks, there was tens of thousands of them. we just flight shot them, in the wind, they were barely clearing the fences on the way to the fields. all of the outfitters were in the fields and barely fired a shot. hard to compete with that many live birds. not many whites in yet, a few ross geese. no lesser canadas either, just a lot of specks, fun shooting though. seemed to be quite a few young ones in the flocks, so they must of had a decent hatch.

fishmonger535, we havent seen alot of Specks yet. Where are you loacted at? These are mainly local birds we are shooting. One goose was a lessar. We have hardly even seen a duck. We are in the Wetaskiwin area.
From my sources along the Sask boarder the white geese havent even shown up yet. Damn this warm weather sucks lol

I was North of Cold Lake last weekend and I saw more than 5000 specs migrating through. There was flock after flock. All specs with the odd snow mixed in but no Cans. If it wasn't for the fact that I've been working I would be out there smacking birds. Come Wednesday I'll be out getting my fill...can't wait.

Well I'm sure we will have a few more good shoots over the next 6 weeks. Hopefully I can tied down at least one good shoot a weekend for us.
Yup that's the new 11-87 XCS. Lets just say I have a new favorite shotgun

Yup the grand majority of that will be going into jerky. I also keep all of the legs. My Grandpa loves eating them. Plus I have a few people who like me to save them a good feed or two.
Last week I had given a bunch of meat to some Philipinos that work for us. Last night I went over to their place to watch the boxing match and have a few brews. They cooked up the goose meat in coconut milk, chili flakes and some other stuff. Oh man was it spicy sweet goodness!!!!

I hope some of that Jerky makes it down South!! That's the best stuff I've tasted in a long time!
Congrats on the hunt.

Geese
We were out Saturday about an hour north of Edm, a lot of specs around there already, as well as canadas. No whites yet though and never hardly saw a duck either. Looks like you had a great shoot, by the look of the stuble, a pea field?, pretty hard to beat them.

More specks this year than I have ever seen, think the weather has been holding them around, very few whites, a few Grays starting to show up....ducks are spotty....either very few or a couple thousand, coming in right at dark.... or too late to shoot

Yup both pea fields. The second field had been harrowed so lots of the stubble is broken up.

Oh yes there will be jerky headed south for my southern friends. Slight improvement to it though this year.

Too be honest this has been the toughest years of competition I have ever had with outfitters.
In my general area there is three outfitters and one wanna be outfitter who are competing for birds. After getting shafted out of hunts for the first ten days of the season you just learn to play the game.

The spirit of what? Too bad about the outfitters, it's a shame they have to taint our Sport.

My area is pretty quiet as far as outfitting. So no, I didn't get beat to a shoot. And if I did, I'd just set up 1 field downwind and wear em out anyways, so what's your point?
