There are definitely established carp fisheries south of Red Deer.

Bee..

Any idea of how carp got established or are there different species.
The ones the Govt stocked were supposed to be trips.

There was a great conversation about this that I started in the regular fishing section of this site. There are established carp in the Bow river and south Saskatchewan river, and likely the Oldman river since it is connected to the other two named. Click on my youtube address under my message and there is a video of some carp I caught on the rivers.

mostly it is being at the right place at the right time. I fish the river so much, that I am usually at the right place atleast once or twice a year. When I see a school(the can come in huge schools), I put a slip rig on. That is when you have a hook on the end of your rig and a slider weight on the line that can only slide within a certain section of your line. I use a size 8 bait hook with about an inch of worm put onto it. If the worm is too big, the carp can't seem to get it in their mouth. From my experience they feed on or near bottom, but I bet a store bought pickerel rig would work fine. When fishing realise that they nibble, so you have to be ready to pull on tiny twitching of the rod.

If you guys would like me to make a video and put it on my youtube account, let me know and I'll make one for you. It is probably the easiest way of showing you how the rig is.

We use to target carp on the fly (not in AB) and it was super fun. Sight fishing is awesome.

Size 12 or 14 cream coloured maggot pattern (gotta match the hatch).

Don,

They all seem to be Prussian Carp, not grass carp.

It is my suspicion that there were multiple introductions.

However, it is far too late to do anything about them and they will become a common member of our fauna, like brookies, browns, and 'Bow River Rockets'.

I would. Along with some video of you catching the next batch.
These buggers will be common game before too long.

I could care less about carp, but I'm sure SRD would love to see your "how to" video using bait on Bow and Oldman.

Diamonddave and Grinr might want to review the fishin' regulations before making these insinuations.

What type of water are you are finding the Carp in, slow pools, back eddies....?

I'll bet these carp will also be found in side channels and flood water ponds.

There is very few sections of the BOW that you are allowed to use bait in, and at very select times of the year. Thats what I am insinuating. I would have to check them to get exact but Im pretty sure the only spot would be where it dumps into the sask, where you can use bait other than maggotts.

As suggested, check the regs.
There is over 150 +km of river on the Bow and another 150+ km on the Oldman that allows ALL legal bait whenever the river is open to fishing....

Correct me if I am wrong but is it not just from bossano dam down to the SSR that it is open? I have no idea how long that it is, but if I read it right that's it? Never fished down that far.

I've caught them in everything just about. But when I have targeted them I mostly cast into slow moving parts of the river where there is a shallow gravel bar. Lots of the time you can see them swimming. Once you see their dorsal fin it is very easy to tell if you are seeing carp. I have also done well in back eddies.

Believe it our not little buddy, but a whole lot of fishable river is to be found below the Bassano Dam......... a whole lot. Where you leave the little world of trout, whitefish, and other fishes (Which are great fun to catch) and enter the world of pike, walleye, sauger, Sturgeon, Redhorse Suckers, Carp, Mooneye, Goldeye, and more.

Same story on the Oldman.

Read Regulations and realise that there is more to the world of fishing then the little world you may find yourself in.
