We have vet insurance for our horses. We purchased it last year after 2 of our young ones racked up near 8g in vet bills.
At the rate vets charge and markup on drugs I'd recxomend it if you have older pets at least.
Wife worked in a clinic for a long time and she highly reccomend it.

The head vet at Vet Emerge recommends it so it's probably worth it.

When I took in my dog, he was already insured through Trupanion since he was a pup. Something like $35 a month, has a $700 deductible (I believe). $700 sounds like alot, but considering breaking a leg can cost thousands of $$$. Pre-existing is a big one. If it's in the vet records, they will know.
He hasn't been to a vet since puppyhood and only has the puppy vaccines. He's happy and very healthy, I see no reason to take him in just because.

We had pet insurance on our last bulldog with Petsecure. It was $80/month and we used it a few times. To us it was worth it for peace of mind. There was one instance where I wasn't working and he had an emergency. It was pay $6000 right now or put your dog down. If I didn't have insurance I would've had to put my best friend down. He passed away in January at 10.
We have 2 Bulldogs now and currently have pet insurance as they are both puppies. We're getting a 3rd next week. We're going to be paying $240/month. I think we're going to cancel and self insurance. I'll put the $240 in the bank every month. If something happens we have it. If they all love to the age of 10 and we don't use it, we'll have just under $30,000.

If you bank the monthly premiums, that amount will pay for surgeries up to something bad enough you will be putting them down anyways.

I just had to pay $3K to repair a torn ACL on my 10 year old terrier. Pet insurance at $80/month would total $9600 over 10 years. Even if it had happened at 2 years old I would have paid $1920 in premiums plus the deductible for a $3K injury.

You sure? I pay $104/month for two golden retrievers that's $1248 a year, that won't even cover a broken leg. How many years do you wanna save up when you gotta make the choice to put your dog down within minutes while you're at vet?

I have it, and I'm ahead because of it. My dog has had a series of related illnesses for which we have only had to pay one deductible. Most dogs people end up behind, some dogs people end up ahead. That's how insurance works. The insurance companies don't do it for charity.

Vets love the idea of insurance no doubt. Its basically underpinning their business. I'm guessing if you chart out the steep rise in costs at vet clinics Vs the uptake of vet insurance you'd see a strong correlation. Just like with dental when they know you have coverage costs go up up up.

Still on the fence about pet insurance. 3 GSP's over 18 yrs. One cost me about 4G in her 16 yrs of life( at age 2, got out of the yard, hit by a car, bad broken back leg). I was out hunting for the day, pre cell days, got home and was told the news.
If it would have happened on a weekday, we would have avoided 2 vet visits that cost me 1200 bucks as they bumped her from Vet, to Emerg hospital(2 nite stay where I picked her up Monday morning and took her to the specialist.) Then a specialist vet who ended up doing the pin in her leg.
The other 2 dogs only needed regular vet checks in their life time.
If I add up the years they were alive and use half of today's seemingly going rate of $80.00 bucks, i would have paid 16G in pet insurance on those 3 dogs.
Gsp # 4 is being thought about. Not sure I would by the insurance yet. I guess if you have a breed with known issues, it's worth it.

I know that $80 is on the high end because our English bulldogs are at a greater risk of something happening health wise. From my experience the insurance is great if you don't have the funds for a large bill. I'm at the point where I'm going to just save the money, if something happens and i don't have the amount saved, I can still afford the bill. The insurance would be nice but in the end I'll still be up (unless these 3 cost me $30K over 10 years).
If you know that a large bill will be the deciding factor in your dog living or dying, I'd suggest insurance. We did find that CAA has pet insurance at reasonable rates

We pay around 150 a month for all of our horses. I'm not sure what it is about dogs that makes it so costly?
Our deductible is fairly low as well.
Emerg for one horse can't be as much as a dog but apparently it is.

Boolits are much cheaper insurance. I wish I were kidding but I'm not.
