Default Newbie here with a couple of questions.

Hey everybody, I'm fairly new to hunting. Well I get out and shoot gophers every year and hunted coyotes a few times. But this year coming up I want to get into big game. Just deer for now. Anyways I was just wondering about wmu 118. How's that looking for White tail? I have some private land I can hunt off of north of Elkwater. But I've taken a few drives out there and I've seen a ton of Mule does and quite a few coyotes. But no White tail. Since Muleies are all on draws I think my only option is Whitetail. Anyways, I've seen a ton of white tail IN Medicine Hat, including a couple decent bucks on a golf course. Should I maybe look at getting on some lease land north of the S Sask river, or just keep looking for White tail out by that land I've got permission for? I know it's a long ways off, but Works been slow and I mine as well get out there and start looking now. Bored outa my wits anyway. Lol

Plenty of WT north of elk water, agreed that there is tonnes of Mules but you'll see the WT out there as well. Worst case scenario don't be afraid to cruise around and look other places. Make friends with the landowners all around and you'll always have options when it comes to hunting season. Get your draws in for Mulie while you wait.

Stick around the flatter farm land, where it is green and try to find trees. Or river bottoms with trees.

Ya Ill keep looking. The land I got acces to has some good valleys full of trees in spots. I'm sure they are out there but man a lot of Mulies. I've read the regs but what do you mean get my draw in for Mulies in the mean time? Just not sure what you meant. Ya I've been getting up nice and early and checking out a lot of other areas closer to Manyberries, S of Elkwater. Maybe I'll take a drive up north of Brooks and see what's out there. And I'll read the regs at least 2 more times.lol I actually went over them twice in the last couple of weeks. They need one of them Alberta hunting regulations for idiots books.lol I'm no idiot, but I'd read it. Thanks guys.

Take a look at the Alberta hunting draw results and the 2015 hunter harvest reports to see how long it takes (roughly) to draw a mule or other tag. Draw comes out around June or July, enter the draws and see if you can be awarded a special licence for the 2016 hunting season.

In the regs, there are pages of what animals are on draw and not on draw that should determine which WMU / species you should focus your efforts in your first or so years.

Check out Seven Persons area, there used to be lots out there. Also, southwest of there is Murray Lake Ranching, lots of whities east of main ranch, also lots of hunters. Ask for permission, stay on trails with your truck, really good people out there.

Start '999-ing' to build priority.
It'll be easier to understand once the draws are open 🙂

Just checked mywildalberta.com and the stats this past season say WMU118 is typically undersubscribed for Mulie doe. Which means if you put in for Mule doe draw in 118 you will get drawn. So this coming fall you'll be able to have both a mule deer doe and whitetail general lic. Remember normally you can only draw one tag per species but with Mule deer you can put in for both the doe and buck draws at the same time for the same WMU and same season. So you'll draw the doe tag and still gain a priority point on the Mule Buck.

Hey that's alright. Cause I've seen a lot of mule does out there. Sat with my binos watching 12 of them from about 2 hundred yards. Narrows my chances Down quite a bit for at least 1.
